Things That Gladden The Heart

So the week before last when I was stood on the poppy stall I bumped into a woman called Linda. She taught my kids to swim. She has links going back to Rebecca Adlington and Ollie Hynd. She is very old school. Anyway I asked her about the charity she runs at the pool immediately after Bradley and Layla Tash do there lifesaving swimming. Bradley is 12 and Layla 10.
Anyway she says she set up the charity 40 years ago and basically volunteers help the disabled with swimming. I mentioned young Bradley would be interested in that but she said “they have to be 13”. “ oh, Bradley is 13 next month” I mentioned. So I never mentioned it to me daughter as I never got chance, but last Monday when the kids finished there lifesaving lesson, Linda collared Bradley. He and his mum/ my daughter never knew what Linda was on about so she explained. Anyway Bradley was buzzing and he stayed for an hour and watched.
Earlier this evening, he asked his mum and Linda if he could watch again. She said “ no, you can keep an eye on that young lad that has serious ADHD”. So he did. He followed the kid everywhere at the side of the pool. Apparently Bradley and this kid got on like an house on fire. At the end of the lesson. The lads son came up to my daughter and was a little emotional. As it transpires. This kid with ADHD has said more to Bradley in an hour than he has said to anyone in a week.
She, Bradley, Mum and Linda are buzzing.
Linda pulled Bradley to one side and said “ you start next week”.

Just sat in our Chemist waiting for my flu jab when I was suddenly transported back to the 50's - they sell spud guns!
I once brought a double decker bus to a grinding halt with a single shot. The conductor was basking on the rear platform like a dog hanging out a car window. I took aim as they cruised past and caught him on the nose!
He yelped, rang the bell to stop the bus and chased us, swearing like mad.
Luckily it was uphill and he ran out of puff.
We ran into the park and almost wet ourselves laughing - with fright!
Ah, happy days.

Got all the family Christmas presents today. Only do parents and young nieces/nephews s not a massive amount but the parents can be difficult to buy for. Just got the good lady to buy for now and I know roughly what I am getting her and it will all be done online.

Day out in London to today with Mrs M, as much as I’m not into Christmas she’s a proper Santas little helper and loves it. So we have done a fair bit of shopping in Oxford St, treated her to some jewellery she wanted in Selfridges, got a few bits for my kids that she knew they’d like. Found a cool little Golf shop called Capital Golf just off Oxford St and bought a couple of bit. Wandered round both Leicester Square & Covent Garden Christmas markets watching her like a kid in sweet shop beaming at all the wonders and buying bits for the tree.

Lovely bit of food in Big Easy at Covent Garden, I highly recommend their Lobster Mac ‘n’ Cheese 🤤 For putting up with a day of doing what I don’t enjoy she said she had a treat for me. Got the Tube across to Richmond and she took me in the Ted Lasso shop 😍, walked out with a Richmond FC Visor for golf and some other little bits and I even chose a Ted Lasso decoration for the tree all paid for by her , then grabbed a quick coffee from Caffè Nero for the journey home.

It was just a lovely day. She might think I don’t enjoy the Christmas shopping (I don’t), but what she often doesn’t realise I don’t go because I have to despite my apathy towards Christmas I genuinely love seeing her smile and happy that’s why I go along. She’s now tucked up in bed knackered after a long day and doesn’t know I’ve booked tickets to Wicked Part 2 tomorrow for her as a thank you.

Glad you had a great time in London, there is literally no place like it and it’s refreshing to hear someone praise it rather than saying what a dump it is. 👍

People are strange about London, there is almost a badge of honour to be reactionary about it. We were there a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. I could happily go another 5 years before returning though. It's a full on place and it's not for everyone. Lots of great parts to it, it's one of the great cities of the world.

Ah nostalgia

I often watch The Footage Detectives on TPTV (a channel that shows old films and TV series), a programme about bygone years.

Viewers send in old home films, toys, gadgets books etc

The spud guns came up on one of the episodes this year.

I used to go fairly often, mainly to do the museums. I was very happy once to find a pub near the National Gallery that did traditional pub grub like cottage pie and veg with beer prices that were not the exorbitant London prices you often get.

I love it. Number 1 daughter has lived there for 20+ years. She’s out in Deptford now, brilliant for Borough Market, via London Bridge, or out to Greenwich. I guess it helps that I have no problem navigating the underground in relation to attractions and areas above.

She has a 5 bed Edwardian house, which means we pay for all the meals but have no accommodation costs.

Re Cities, I don’t mind London one bit. But I like to get in, do my bit and then get out. Maybe it’s a Northern thing, but I love the Markets. Borough and especially Camden.
Am sure most folk have there favourite City. Mine deffo being Manchester and the Xmas market. Which me and Missis T will be going to on Tuesday.

I lived “Inner London” for 30 years, I’m now “Outer London” and still think a trip to London is a thrill… walking along the embankment just down from the Savoy towards London Bridge at night has to be one of the best city views in the world. The fantastic free museums and brilliant galleries, great food and Pubs. It really is World Class. Throw in the Tube and the Lime bikes and it’s also one of the most accessible cities in the world.

I know all of its faults which are common in most big cities.

Yes.
My favourite city in the UK is St Davids. ❤️

I've slated it before here .... AS A PLACE TO LIVE.
Visiting ... it's great - go quite often. Never ever stay more than 2 nights though - as I've learned that that's the timeframe after which I start to really not like it.
