When I was in Cardiff for the new year a couple of years back. I was flued up to the eye balls. In bed new years eve at 10.00pm supping hot chocolate with dead man’s fingers rum in it. The only thing that got me through was Welsh cakes which I discovered that weekend. Quite frankly they are a thing of beauty. Absolute gorgeous. Struggle to get them in Mansfield ☹️

No, no and not on your life!
Being genuinely used to cockles and laverbread in my youth (every Saturday quite elderly ladies would knock door to door selling these "delicacies", harvested from Penclawdd in the Gower) as my Dad would buy them enthusiastically, laverbread in greaseproof wrapped paper parcels and cockles by the pint I was quite familiar with them.
Then, a few decades later, when staying in a hotel in Newtown, Mid Wales, I was asked at breakfast if I would like a portion of laverbread with my cooked breakfast.
I said "Yes please" being pleasantly surprised.
I heard the waitress enter the kitchen saying "He says he'll have some!"
She came back out and said "Chef is asking how you'd like it cooked". I knew immediately that Chef had never before dealt with it.
I suggested he lightly sprinkle it with flour, season it and fry it until completely heated through.
When my breakfast arrived I was astonished at the humungous volume of laverbread on my plate and by the number of staff who appeared to nonchalantly walk around smiling at me as I struggled to demolish it ( as much as I like it).
I discovered later they had a coach of Swiss tourists the day before and their marketing coup of a "typical Welsh breakfast" had been met with horror at the sight of it.

Slightly later tee time than usual this morning so I've done the Saturday Tesco shop at 8am rather than 3pm. That is a very different experience which I might repeat.
Never been in there before when the massive, freshly baked, rye & spelt sourdough loaves are still in stock. Looking forward to my late lunch after golf.

Guess what Ave been googling tonight. Need a cast iron skillet. ☹️

Cheers Sid.
I've got one of these that belonged to my Welsh nana. Found this picture of a similar one. I ate loads of her Welsh cakes growing up.
The thing is awful heavy and likely to be 150 years old. Going to get it out of the loft and have a go.
