Love the small faces, never really listened to Humble pie. It's often said that you should never meet your heroes.
Wrong!
I met one of mine today and he was a lovely, humble man who had as much time for me as I wanted.
His name is Jerry Shirley.
For those who don't know, he was the drummer of my favourite band, Humble Pie.
What a band, what a man.
Oh, and some of the stories he could tell!
Absolutely made my day and he thanked me for making his day, too.
Love the small faces, never really listened to Humble pie.
Stevie Marriott is up there with one of the best male vocalists for me.
Sounds like Jerry is a bit of a legend
Only really got into the small faces during lock down. For me, Steve Marriott is the best male vocalist of them all.
George Michael and Freddie Mercury coming close, but no cigar.
And yeah, Jerry is a legend.
Only really got into the small faces during lock down.
All or nothing is only song of theirs that gets played & that’s not often.
I’d heard song of a baker, but only because Ocean colour scene covered it.
Someone on Twitter did me a play list & unreal.
Heard itYou should listen to Afterglow.
Was it a one off concert SILH.Went to a concert yesterday evening in which a new piece of choral music - The Northern Requiem, was premiered, and it was just awesome - quite stunning. To a full house in the Crooked Spire (St Mary’s) Church in Chesterfield, a local 70 strong community choir accompanied by a brass band, timpani drums and the church’s magnificent organ, sang of the mining communities and the miners strike of 1984.
A magnificent requiem by a local composer to an audience with its roots deep in mining; the industry now gone; the communities and their cultures devastated and 40yrs on still struggling. It was thrilling and very moving - at times bringing tears to the eyes - especially when singing of the women supporting their men, and towards the end when a group of ex-miners wearing their Coal Not Dole t-shirts marched down the aisle carrying the Derbyshire Area NUM banner accompanied by a small representation of a brass band…as they ‘marched back to work’…with the audience standing and applauding.
It was recorded and filmed - hopefully for release and/or broadcasting. If you have any interest in mining communities and the events of 1984, or if you love choral, organ and brass music, then you’d love this. We did.
My MiLs next door neighbour and my wife’s childhood and still very close friend, was in the choir - my MiL is from the mining community of Beighton in South Yorkshire…she’d be very proud of her neighbour and of Chesterfield for what they put on yesterday evening.
Last night was…but it was so good and so well received that they will surely think of putting it on again. I’ll ask our neighbour. And as good a recording as they might well have made…the sound live in the magnificent sanctuary of the church cannot, I am pretty sure, be captured. The atmosphere as the work progressed built and built…it was electric. I’m not sure the atmosphere would be quite the same were it performed in a church in my home town in Surrey - a rather different community and rather different audience…Was it a one off concert SILH.

I’ll also ask if the recording will be released - pretty sure it will be.
SpaceX catching their Starship Rocket booster on its return, first time! Fantastic achievement!

Do you live near a body of water?Whilst getting my bike out this morning noticed loads of geese flying over and a dog walker stopped to watch too, much have taken about 2 minutes for them all to pass. Commented to the wife at lunch and looked up migrating geese and now have a far greater respect for them , boy do they cover some distances .
