The views of a High Handicapper

Good blog, I enjoyed that very much.
The query I have is why give up footy? Is it just because your forty?
I still play every week, also against some 18yr olds, and forty is a distant memory for me.
Give it another shot ............................ but don't give up golf!
Oh, which footy team do you follow.

Hi mate, I gave up football at 30 due to recurring problems with my hip and groin, couldn't keep doing it, I'm only 32 now and still play 5 aside occasionally. I miss playing but not the pain. Thanks for reading the blog. I'm a Sunderland fan. Ha'Way the lads

Welcome.
Good read..😉
I can't tell you that you'll be good at golf just because you were a good footballer.
Like you I played to a pretty high club standard.
Played them game since I was 8 until at 34 injury put the anchors on me. I'm now 41..
I ruptured both of my Achilles Tendons within 18 months of each other and I was never able to recover to play at that level again.
So it was time to make the transition to golf as I don't think I would have coped very well with not having something to look forward to at the weekends like I did my footie.
When I first started playing I was like most. Hacking my way round . Never really got the bug until about my 5th or 6th round out and like most again I hit that one perfect shot that had me sitting up and paying attention. I started, off a handicap of 21 but never lost that competitive instinct that I had playing ball.
I never threw in a towel ever and I guess that's why I've got to the handicap I hold now and thats with a
Family and a job.

I can fully relate to those important goals and penalties except I was at the other end being a centre back I was the last line of defence trying to stop those important goals from being scored by the opposition.
The reason that you might feel golf is so hard I imagine is that In golf there is nowhere to hide when your off..
In football you can still get by 90 mins playing mediocre because there are 10 other lads that can pick up the little bit of slack.
Golf I'm afraid has no room for error.
Even when your playing well and you think " Ya I've got this" , It can kick you in the nuts.

All you need when playing is to find that competitiveness that you had when you played ball and that's what will drive you to get better.
It's a game that if you really want to get better you will exhaust every possible angle to try and find some way of playing it to some degree of decency.

Stick with it and I know eventually your blog will be more golf biased with trials and tribulations than your footie career.

Thanks Mike, I'm starting to see improvement in my game and I've defo got the bug, I'm looking forward to hopefully playing and improving for many years, I miss playing footy but not the pain I was in at the end,

Likewise pal. My life revolved around my fitness and my football. But being out of work for 5 months on the trot twice over 18 months and having a young family as well doesn't be long putting things in perspective.
You start to reaccess your priorities fairly lively.
I miss the football but I've never felt nerves playing football like I have experienced representing our golf club in national competitions. It's a whole New level of jittery.😀😀 In a good day...

I am in a similar situation although I am not quite giving up football yet, I am intrigued as to why you presumed football to golf transition would be easy, I played quite a good standard of badminton and squash in my teens and even though they are more hand eye coordination like golf I still didn't expect golf to be easy. After my first lesson I realised that there was a lot more needed than that to get a consistent swing and accuracy. I think having a good general fitness does help though. I have come on quite a lot in just a few months now being able to hit consistently straight and 8/10 hitting the ball how I would like. Look forward to reading your blog

Think of it like this...
If you play golf for the same length of time that you've played football for... How good you could become with the same application to practice and playing the game as you have for trainging and playing in football..
When people first start playing golf they think it should come naturally to them.
That's not the case with any sport. You have to work at something to get better at it..
If you were swinging a golf club from the age of 8 you can bet that by your teens your be in single figures and you are an adult you'd be plenty good enough...

Always just been quite good at sports so thought I would pick up golf easily, didn't take me long to realise I was wrong ha

But how good were you at football at 12 years of age? And you'd probably be playing for about 4 yrs competitively at that point. By the time you get to mid 20's you will have played and practiced for almost 20 years.

Thinking you're going to be a good golfer inside a year, fitting it around work and life, is a little naïve. Competent, yes, good single figures, unlikely.

Its a great journey, especially in the early years when the improvements are rapid.

Good luck and enjoy.
