I think most of you are missing the point..the point being,
can you walk the walk, are you a good golfer?or do get lost in all the mechanics ,if timgolfy played as well as he writes,he'd be down to scratch, the rest of it is verbal
rubbish..

I've got to 5.1 now having been off 13 a year ago and to go lower I know need to improve my short game.

Our +1 lad was off 2 a year ago and is longer than Tim and he concentrated on short game and is now reaping the benefits, it's joy to play with and watch him make birdies.

I like try and make 2-3 birdies a round and keep the doubles off, that's how i score.

A few months ago McIlroy came out and said he didn't think the short game was important as if you hit GIR you are quids in...

And what exactly does he know about anything. Just tell me what he's ever won. Oh..... :o

[/QUOTE]

which is why he spent the last hour of practice before his final round practicing out of a bunker.

He would have had a green jacket to go with his shiney U.S Open trophey if he had worked more on his short game/putting.

I can't beleive I just had a go at the guy who dominated the U.S Open in such spectacular fashion but it was clear he has been working on his putting.

Apparently it was a ten minute refresher lesson and that was that. Mental. The kid is too good.

Just got back from the course. Neither the Timgolfy or Tiger method can help me. Anyone got a method that enables me to take range form onto the course? :D

Carry the range mat around with you... :D :D :D

On another note and to answer the OP....You can be the longest player in the world but if you cant use the scoring clubs well you'll still be joe average in my opinion.

Nice idea but I was hitting off grass. Maybe I should dig up a square of turf and carry that instead! :D

Today, I went to the range. (Surely not RG? :( :o :D)

Two bays away from me was the most annoying range-er (is that a word?) I have ever encountered, EVER, PERIOD.

Dressed in his turtle neck black fitted top, wearing shades and his footjoys (despite the fact that "golf shoes" are banned), sporting a 6-pack, I bet he owned the Audi in the car park and shags glamour models at least twice a week. He only had 3 clubs, about £800-worth of R11s or similar. His first shot (after no warm up at all) was a 70 yard sliced driver. He followed this with topped, fatted, pulled, sliced, sky-ed, you name it. 100 balls in about 20 minutes.

I'd hit 10 or so, mostly because I was so distracted by what he was doing. I know I should ignore it, but I can't. :(

He then went for another 100, all equally badly hit, some pulled 80(?) yards over the left fence, others sliced 30 degrees right into the field. He did catch one nice one towards the end. It must have easily reached the end at 310.

In the old days, I'd pick up my basket, go for a cuppa and come back when safe.

It was a masterclass in how to get worse, waste time and money and make yourself look like a total twit all in one activity.

It wasn't, it couldn't have been ...

Could it?

No...

But maybe...?

Was it our very own............?????????????????

Surely not.....

I've always said in these arguments that improving your short game is without a doubt the best way to get your handicap down BUT that was based on the fact that the player was at the stage where he could hit the ball long enough and straight enough to get within 30 yards of the green in regulation the majority of the time...

If you are just starting out then you need to work on both but focusing mainly on the long game probably makes sense.

tiger

I used to play with a doc of psychology when I played in england, really nice chap, single figure player, said that when he is on the course if he starts to find himself getting nervous, he just imagines himself in the booth at the range, takes a sec or too, then calmly steps up to play shot. combined with when he is on the range, he imagines shots from the course. works for him, have a go, may or may not help, but worth a try?

To be honest it sounds like he had a much better time at the range than you did... Hitting 200 bad shots in a row is not fun, but it surely must be better than WATCHING 200 bad shots in a row!!

LOL :)

I wasn't watching exactly, I was peppering (well, trying to pepper) the flags at 100, 150 etc. and every now and again, a banana exocet would cross the flight path of my ball, or he'd hit the roof of the groundsman's shed.

:o

Tiger/Tim

Next time you go out for a quick 9. Take no more club than a 4 iron out with you and see what you score.

Also another little game you can play is you must play the first two shots on a par 4 with the same club(3 shots on a par 5) See what you score doing this as well.

You'll be pretty surprised by the scoring

To be fair to him Tim is very happy with his approach and by all accounts it is helping him. It's me who is the basket case. JT I'll give it a go alongside your suggestion DTD.

:)

I don’t know have I missed something??

I thought the idea of playing golf was, well to actually play golf on a golf course?

When I started I just played golf, very rarely did I go to a range and managed to go from 24 down to 14 in a couple of months. Admittedly it took me another two years to get to single figures, but I enjoy playing. Lots of guys I know all just play, don’t obsess about equipment their swing or how far they hit it, just play and enjoy it.

Your range BANS golf shoes?! That is the most ridiculous part of your post! :D

And Patrick hits it right on the head...I only go to the range when the course isn't an option.

The last few years I've spent a lot of time on the range because my old course was too busy. Since I moved to Royal Ascot, I have hardly been to the range, just played as much as I could. I'm playing better now than I ever had.

I have no problem with people using the range a lot, I actually used to enjoy it but it gave me time to think about my swing and tinker. I'd find something I thought was working then when I'd play I'd be thinking about what I was doing on the range. Now I just play, no thinking and no tinkering. I'm a lot happier now with my game than I ever was and I practice less.
