My take on all this range stuff is that it's like tennis. You can spend hours whacking balls back at a serve machine, but stick another player on the other side of the net and suddenly the predictability is taken out. This is where you're lacking the "craft" you need to play the game.
I do agree with a lot of posts on here- long game and short game are both important if you want to be a good all round player. But personally i wouldn't be spending hours down the range. I think i've been once in the last 2 years.
I got down to 5 by playing loads of golf on the course, and adding shots to my repretoire.
To be a good golfer takes a certain amount of imagination, it's not just about hitting a 6 iron 160 yards every time. It's about adapting to the variables in front of you. This is not something that can be learned by paying a fiver and whacking 100 balls, no matter how good your swing gets.
