The Tennis Thread

That is a weird one. I grew up playing tennis and yes, you are taught to apologise for those net cord ones. It seems daft since you've not done it on purpose, and it benefits you, so you're obviously not sorry about it really. Personally I think it would be enough to simply not celebrate that point, since you won it by pure luck. (In this instance Anisimova failed on that count as well though, as it won her the game and she gave it a bit of a fist pump I believe.)

Anyway, Djokovic is out. Great news!
Why is it great news?

Yes mate I play off +1.

I also played tennis to a decent level as a junior. It's not really about levels of sport it's just about having the awareness to acknowledge a large stroke of luck. It's as simple as that.
Large stroke of luck? I used to hit the top of the net regularly....how many let serves are there? Just part of the game....no reason to apologize for something that happens all the time.

Not sure there is a relevant comparison within golf

It’s excepted etiquette within tennis that a net cord point won the player does acknowledge a simple sorry by raising hand or racquet

It is fortune to hit the top of the net and the ball to creep over - it’s a lucky shot that’s not planned
They don't plan to hit the net, but it happens a lot. With the pro's, I understand the usual etiquette is usually to kind of raise your racket etc. But.....why would you get pissed off if the other person didn't do it? Just looking for a reason to be mad I tend to think....she lost the match and was understandably grumpy.

Seems a pretty good comparison to golf to me. If you play a lot of tennis, you are going to hit the top of the net a lot. Nobody is good enough to do it on purpose, but it sure happens a lot. If you play a lot of golf you are going to get a lot of lucky/unlucky bounces....just part of the game and nobody is good enough to do it on purpose.

Actually, I'm kind of the same. The guy is a great tennis player and will go down as one of the best ever. I don't watch tennis (or sports in general) but I think his behavior at the Aussie Open a few years ago with Covid issue just got on my bad side....and I've been rooting against him since. Same with Tiger for me, I was rooting for him during his early career and then the Tiger-Tiger-Tiger constantly irked me and I started rooting for "anybody but Tiger". I'm a bad man.......

Fair enough.

I just wondered about the reasoning behind taking obvious unbridled joy over the defeat of one of the greatest to play a particular sport. I mean...its not as though he shagged one of our sisters/mums/girlfriends. Yes he took a questionable (putting it mildly) stance over Covid but he wouldn't be the first iconic sportsman to display bad judgement or behavior and I'm not sure, in my book, this would warrant such a negative view towards Djokovic. Maybe I'm the bad man.

No "unbridled joy" from me.....just a tiny bit of annoyance at them. They aren't people I know, so I don't care that much if they do well or not.

I don't like Brussel Sprouts either. I've nothing horrible against them....they just don't do it for me. :)

Not you...it was Orikorus post I was referencing.

Confirmed, you are a bad man!

To be fair I watched that point and I did think it was poor value not to hold her hand up because it was a fluke that she benefitted from. In golf it would be like someone hitting a sprinkler head and the ball bouncing in on the 18th in a crunch match, then celebrating like mad. Nothing wrong with it but poor form all the same..
Or shanking it into a tree then the ball bouncing back onto the green and holing out for a win.

If something like that happens with ANY group I've ever played with...the others will be taking the piss out of you for getting that lucky. Fair enough. No reason to apologize for stupid luck. You apologize for doing something wrong.

The winner banked £52,631.58 per minute played in the final.
The loser banked £63,333 per point won in the final.

That's more than most footballers!

Wow, just seen the women's final was a whitewash. Imagine if you'd bought tickets specifically for that! 😂
My wife and her friend enter the ballot each year, they have a decent success rate. About 3 years ago my wife got the offer of first week, second day, court one tickets. Her friend got the women's final. They took the first week tickets with about 3 seconds of discussion.

Today was just appalling value for money and not a great advert for the game.
