When i googled it , it looks like you in one of the pics that come up also .. no sash so a different occasion

I've lived through a timeline of many royal events.
I have a photograph of me at a Coronation street party, age 3, the earliest memory I have.
Not a staunch royalist but sensible enough to know that the tradition and the pageantry are a massive asset, not a cost, to Britain.
She also still identifies us, for what we are, or should be - calm, gracious, principled, long serving and disciplined.

She has stood, for years, as a pinnacle above every other 'celebrity' on this planet.

I think she's good for business for UKPLC as the whole concept of royalty brings in lots of tourists. Plus she/they have a tremendous amount of respect overseas. Also the royal family seems to have slimmed themselves down a bit from the excesses of the 80s which has helped. I think it's also a good job Diana/Kate/Harry have come in as they have modernised it a bit as people like Edward and Andrew weren't really the best advert for it. Not sure where I stand on Charles, I like the fact he is outspoken on environmental and architectural topics, but think when he eventually becomes king it will only be for a short time.

I wonder whether Charles would be King. I think for Royalty to kick on it might not be a bad idea for him to step aside and let William be king. I think Charles is still a bit 80's Ish. William would "keep it modern".

I'd vote for letting it proceed until QE2 abdicates/passes away and do away with the monarchy at that time.

I feel a bit sorry for Wills and Harry, especially Wills since he's "it". Only as sorry as you can feel for people born into a life of wealth and privilege, mind you, but there are definite down sides to it sometimes.

hopefully they take on born this plan and skip that nitwit Charles, leave talking to his plants!

I quite like Charles. He seems a decent enough type and does seem to care about what goes on. I don't think they will change the constitution to "skip a generation" and with all the medical care they get they will be pretty long lived.

And while she now has the longest reign, she's been a far better Monarch than Victoria ever was as she spent most of her later years hidden away from the people. I thought it was great when the Queen photo-bombed those two girls.

Funnily enough, I'm not really a royalist but I respect them more now than I did 20-30 years ago. I think they have realised they have to be more modern and "of the people".

As for the National Anthem, it's a Dirge. Have you read the lyrics? Awful. We should be getting something more uplifting like Rule Britannia or Land of Hope and Glory.

Billy Connolly does a great set on the National Anthem but I can't post it here as my works system won't allow me access to YouTube.

The monarchy and its pageantry is 'our' national branding - and should remain for the reasons given.

You do not dismantle an asset, just because it does not suit a minority. I guess this is what you are talking here.

I think that 'the vote' to which you refer, would be overwhelmingly in favour of its retention.

Not sure what minority you think I'm representing here....? Just stating a personal opinion.

Suspect you may be right about that vote, I'm often on the wrong side of popular opinion.

I think Charles will be a good King when his time does come. William, likewise.

Not just Americans. They are a tourist draw globally and do travel as ambassadors for the UK.

Yep, not just Americans but yes, they should be paid by the tourist board, they are just an advert for something that does not really exist... but dont tell those considering a holiday in the UK...
