£20 million for a guy to come here and wave at people and preach about morality???

From the lack of moral leader himself!!!

Good thing he's across the channel... :D

We could do with preaching from other more "moral" leaders we have had (who quite often paid for their own trips!!!)

Simple mate - if we all had the same attitude as you no one would be called to account for any wrong doing. To compare things that the catholic church condone, with marmite, is utterly ridiculous.

Is it?Really?

Their belief is that Homosexuals are wrong and that is their choice,I believe liking marmite is wrong and that is my choice but if people don't agree with me I aint going to lose sleep over it as folk are entitled to like what they wish.As I say, life is too short.

He doesn't half pontificate a lot.

I found his statement comparing atheists to Nazis deeply offensive and a bit hypocritical from a former Hitler Youth member.

All the finery and grandeur ( from both the Catholics and Anglicans ) is absolutely ridiculous in this day and age.

This goes for royalty too.

Young people do need moral guidance however, society is in a mess in this country, don't know what the answer is I'm afraid. :(
It aint religion thats for sure. Kids have religion drummed into them from day in one schools, if it doesnt work from that age, then when will it ever?

I am squarely in the "I dont believe in any god" camp so have to say, 20million for him to visit the uk??, aye saunter!

He was up at Wimbledon Common this afternoon at a buliding along Parkway. I knew it was there and was something to do with the Vatican but had forgotten all about it until I saw it on Sky news. I phoned my mate who is up at London Scottish (nearest club) and apparently it was a nightmare trying to get anywhere near the club in or out for two hours before hand. He only turned up in a police escorted convoy, went through the iron gates and inside. Another fine use of our police resources

The guy's Gary Glitter in a white robe and pointy hat!!

He's worked his way up the Catholic ladder so he'll have been well aware of the kiddie fiddling and, evidently, turned a blind eye to it. That, in my eyes, makes him as accountable as the people doing it.

He (and his party of aids) should NEVER be allowed into this country - ever!!

Unfortunately, it's a global problem within this faith. A good friend of mine went to a Catholic school in Sydney, Australia. One of the Brothers who taught at the school was found to be 'playing' with some of the boys. Rather than alert the authorities, he was sent to America to 'find' himself. Find more victims more like!! Now, the church is at fault but so are the parents for not seeking a better punishment but my point is that priests/monks, etc are doing this all around the world and the Vatican appear to be rubber stamping the behaviour.

I did hear that the Pope asked for all the victims to seek spiritual help. I presume that means seeking counsel from a priest. That's a good idea!! Little Jonnie's been fondled by father O'toole - best go and see Father O'malley, he'll see you right........

Difference is that "not liking Marmite" is just something personal that you might tell your mates, but, its quite a different matter to broadcast it to millions and millions of people and I also took the view (and still do) that the Marmite reference covered all the other things that the Catholic church have done.

What annoyed me was the Cardinal who called us a 3rd world country. He then gets taken off the visit with an attack of gout.
Do they think we were born yesterday?

Personally I don't care if he's here or not. If the Catholics want him here then they should be paying for it and it shouldn't be headline news. The VAST majority of us are not Catholic.
And its a State visit - because he's Head of the Vatican State.! A "country the size of a golf course.........

Moving (very) slightly away from the main theme of this thread but still related, I heard part of a radio interview with some football loving person high up in the catholic church in England.

When asked (repeatedly) about why the rc church wouldn't encourage or condone the education in, and the use of, contraception in Africa to help stop the large number of children being born to families in famine hit areas and to reduce the spread of AIDS, his immediate response was to say that it was not a contraception issue - more of a question of family values blah, blah, blah. (My paraphrasing(sp) and interpretation you understand, not his exact words!)

What was doubly worrying for me was that he spoke in such a sincere way that he sounded that he almost believed in what he was saying.

Men, strutting around in very elaborate dresses, allegedly "celebate" (I assume that means without carnal knowledge of women) pontificating (pun intended) about family values .......

Religious leaders, politicians, etc. Are they in the real world, or is it me - and most of you I suspect.

Rant over.

Leftie. Grumpy old man.

Bob. I think I might need a couple of hours head start before the devil finds out :D :D

I too am a lapsed Roman Catholic.

The faith I once held was shattered long ago, I believe that there is a god, but I dont believe, trust, or have any positive feeling towards any of the bastards in the catholic or anglican churches. They reek of hypocrisy.

As a born-again athiest with a similar background I totally agree. I particular deplore the political establishment propagating this through faith schools. We should follow the French and American examples and separate church and state.

I was listening to the radio the other day talking about this and in NO way should the vatican be considered a state. It fails every test, laid down in some convention, about the formation of states, the main one being that there has to be a permanent poeple resident in the territory(vaticanians??).
