The Open: BBC Coverage

The blimp pictures give the impression that there's no one there today or are they all hiding in the shade

From the Daily Torygraphs golf correspondent

Stunned to see attendance figures more than 7,000 down to 23,000 for the opening day from the 31,000 of 2002, particularly as practice numbers were up. Absurd ticket prices, the oppressive heat, scottish cricket nuts? Enquiries are being made

Only a recent subscriber to Sky and grateful that BBC are covering The Open. If you compared what you paid each broadcaster for the coverage then the BBC works out as better value for money. Providing 11 hours of uniterrupted coverage is not easy when there are periods throughout the day when not much is happening. Sky will either go to a commercial break or to a studio discussion. BBC has to be more creative in filling in those gaps. The coverage is provided by the same technical crews whether its BBC or Sky that you are watching. Compare the £12 a month TV license with the £30+ subscription with Sky. If you were paying the BBC the same amount then there maybe grounds for a grumble. So far I have enjoyed the slower pace of coverage rather than watch a shot or putt then go to a commercial break. I have enjoyed Radio Five Live coverage when I haven't been able to see a TV set. Others have already mentioned they have being viewing online. Pretty good for just a few pence a day.

I get a load more value for what I pay sky than the TV license provides, that I know for sure

Great. There is live golf on and I am having watch a special BBC interlude on the fat Scottish kids who pick up litter as volunteers at Muirfield.

The BBC is so stupid, it beggars belief.

@GaryLineker: Watching the golf in the States is different. Almost as many adverts as shots. Don't know how lucky we are #bbcopen
