I would say proper club fitting by a bloke who has experience. I decided on having a look at what was available and opted on clubs that couldn't be bought off the shelf. The fitting was a massive eye opener and i learned more from the fitter than any lesson I had with my pro. By the time I was done I understood why I was having particular shafts fitted to particular clubs, the lofts, even the grips etc. I went out and within a couple of weeks saw my handicap tumble as i was hitting shots with confidence. A great experience.

A few weeks ago I contacted my fitter and mentioned that my driver seemed to be 'going off'. He had me back in and when he had looked at my results told me that the club was just the same, and nothing wrong with it, but my swing speed had dropped by 5mph since fitting 3 years ago. Put me another shaft in and got back more than the distance I had lost. Many would have just gone out and got another driver

Another vote for the ball.

However, the real cost of playing has never been cheaper. 30 years back to be a member meant an enourmous part of your monthly wage - while we may all moan and whinge about costs it is far more accessable now and I really think that has opened it up to a lot more people and the chance to play more often.

For me personally I would say the rescue wood. It means I can get good yardage from not the best lie, and means more par 5s are in play from said poorer lie.

Other options for other players I would say are:
Large headed drivers - meaning poor hits still go OK.
Or, wedges with enormous grooves, meaning even poor strikes spin pretty well.

Big drivers, GI irons and the ball.

All of which is no help at all if you can't hit the ball in the right place anyway. :o

All of it has moved on so much in the last 20 years and it is infinitely easier to hit a driver now with a ball that won't spin too much and will then stop with the spin even an SGI club will impact. Much better that than trying to hit a balata ball with a small wooden head to get it somewhere playable to get your bladed iron on it

For me it has to be the Internet and the ability to be able to post a video for others (they know who they are ;)) to disect and tell me whats up and where...

Without it i would still be fighting a huge slice! :) :) :)

Judging by my score none of it. I was a better player 35 years than i am now. Would have loved to have had the current equipment back in the 70's , so that i could have fully appreciated it all. I think the current drivers and balls would have made a huge difference, but the irons not so much. New grooves on wedges would have helped. Shafts have come on a huge amount, as when i first started manufacturers produced two, regular or stiff. Now they seem to produce a different one for every golfer.
