The EFL Thread

League One seems to be a low quality league this season. I don't think anyone in the bottom 4 will go down and some of the teams in the top half could well struggle over the whole season!

We've been rubbish all season and pressure is mounting on the manager. No style of play, keeps switching the team around and generally rubbish football. The team is miles better than what we're showing and I hope the new owners act quickly or the season could well be a write off.

The mighty Millers winning at Barnsley for the first time since 1970 - before I was even born! They have played each other loads of time in that period, not like us saying we haven’t beaten Liverpool for x years. Now unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions and also won 2 away games on the bounce- after recently going 2 years without winning one!

Anyone know why Stoke are having such a great season? They've really struggled since going out of the PL, really struggled, so what's changed?
Mark Robbins is what’s changed.

Soon as he went in there he created structure to a mess of a team, smart signings, good management and patterns of play. He did a great job at Coventry and didn’t really deserve the boot but he’s done the same at Stoke. Just simple good management getting the best from his team and players.

Are you going to the game on Saturday Neilds?

You look on a fine run of form but we've turned a corner, with 7 points from our last 3. Made a couple of great free signings in Randell Williams and Rinomhota in two weak positions at LB and DM.

Unfortunately not, playing golf instead 🤣
We are on a good run but the injury list is not getting any shorter - played most of the 2nd half this weekend without a striker on the pitch. Also Martha, young Curacoa international is helping them qualify for the WC so is unavailable- he has been brilliant this season, very quick and skilful. If we can get a decent team on the field it should be a good game.

I hope we beat you and badly 🤣

I think it’ll be a decent game as 4LEX said we’ve started putting results together and finally got in some players we needed. Should be a good game but I still hope you lose 😊

Have Middlesbrough found their next manager? Who the ‘ell is Kim Hellberg?

Although nothing official yet, it’s being widely reported that an agreement has been reached with Kim Hellberg. Swansea officials met with Hellberg in London late last week and, according to local media in Swansea, he was expected to be revealed as their next manager later this week. Reports out of Swansea now saying that he’s turned them down in favour of Middlesbrough.

Several higher profile candidates were in the betting, e.g. Steven Gerrard, Carlos Corberán & Jimmy Floyd-H. Raphael Wicky was interviewed at Rockcliffe, Middlesbrough’s training ground, late last week and the betting odds on him shortened to favourite.

Wicky has a decent pedigree, inc. European experience, but who the ‘ell is Hellberg?

Not easy to say this as a Cardiff fan but Swansea generally have a good track record with managers so you've likely got a decent appointment if you've turned his head away from them.

Somewhat funny seeing the reaction to this down west though.

Lots of "well we didn't really want him anwyay" and "prefer to keep our footballing principles"

Did you manage to get to the game today. Ironically the one weekend I’m home and could’ve gone I had to forgo, in fairness I’m away for weeks after today so spending quality time with the good lady.

Heard Rinomhota was good again today and that we created plenty without really threatening. Just wondered if that’s true as my pal that went times to see everything through Rose turned specs 🤣

Turns out didn’t get my wish and beat you lot! 🤣
Heard you’d done pretty well with a fairly ravaged side though. 1-1 from what I’ve heard sounds like it was fair.

I did mate. I said at the start of the season I would miss a fair few home games despite having a season ticket but have been to every one so far 😅

My take was Rotherham came for a draw with all their injuries. We were good in the first half and missed 2 sitters. At least one cast iron penalty was missed too. Second half it was a poor display but Savage bailed us out with a wondergoal. Overall it was 2 points dropped but at 75 minutes it looked like we were going to lose so it's not the worst result. Badly missed Marriott, Danny K and Paddy Lane.

I think I read we're the only team in the EFL without an away win so hopefully we can put that right at Blackpool!

Ruthless, clinical, strong & quick in transition. Was it a footballing lesson for the Boro? Coventry visited the Boro last night and came away 2-4 winners.

0-2 down in 15 minutes yet had the better of the exchanges, and a familiar pattern continues. Boro dominating possession but not good enough in front of goal. By early in the second half Boro were back on level terms. 1-2 down at half time and looking the better team but not putting away their chances. Equally, every time Coventry carried the ball they looked dangerous.

Boro took the game up a notch early in the second half and pretty much camped out in Coventry’s half. The equaliser came from an own goal, and it was looking like only one team would win the game. Then came Boro’s golden opportunity to take the lead. A quick break down the right and a low cross in behind the defenders. Tommy Conway had the keeper to beat from only 8 yards out… he cleared the keeper AND the bar. 14 games without a goal now for Conway, and he’s snatching at every chance.

Coventry then score, very much against the run of play, and before Boro can settle into chasing another equaliser, Coventry score again.

Stoke leap frog Boro into second, and Ipswich are looking very dangerous immediately behind the Boro.

Boro are, in the main, dominating games but struggling for wins, only 3 in the last 11 games. Too many draws, too many dropped points. I’d like 2nd but I’d be happy with 4th… fearing 7th and, potentially, another frustrating season.

That's a two poor results from Boro, league looks very tight though. I think Ipswich and Southampton will go on the charge and spend big in January. Would expect Stoke to fall away.
