TGL

TGL wasn't a good idea in the first place - we're already seeing players having to be brought in when the 'stars' of the team can't be bothered to turn up. Rory is talking about having a location on the west coast to reduce travelling for players then in the same sentence talks about taking it global - which will mean more travelling for the players. I know he's the biggest contradictor in the game of golf, but for him to contradict himself in the same sentence must be a first.... :ROFLMAO:

Think you may have interpreted what he is suggesting

Having something on the west coast to help the players who are all playing currently in that area

And then the future is maybe having events abroad with other international players

He isn’t expecting those in the US to be jumping all over the world in between events

It’s all ideas to bring a diffrent audience

I think it sounds horrific. TGL imo is one the worst things to watch from a sporting perspective. Terrible forced banter between the players an often players that nobody is overly bothered about watching.

If they wanted to grow it then they messed that up by announcing the WTGL. it doesn’t need to be separate as they’re not playing real golf they’re just whacking a ball at a screen. They could have had mixed teams and shown that men’s and women’s golf is equally important and exists in the same space.

TGL does not grow the game, if anything it turns a lot of people away as it’s so cringey. Playing golf with your pals on a SIM or on your own is fun for an hour but watching these guys do it in the pretence of sport and bants! It’s just boring 🥱. I’d say it’s a terrible idea to all involved.

I think the problem with having it mixed, would have been the payments to the players. The lads get paid handsomely - one of the reason TGL was created was to keep players financially happy on the PGAT - but if they had mixed TGL, then they may have had to pay the women a lot more than they will if they have separate events.

Sadly - that means the fantastic opportunity they had to put some of the worlds best male and female golfers in the arena together has been spurned.

Even more showing the separation between the men’s and ladies game then. The ladies are elite in their own right and with TGL they’d be hitting to exactly the same screen. Pay them what they’re worth and make at least TGL to give a unique selling point.

Think I’ll stick to watching paint dry instead.

Small steps at a time

All the original franchises were sold

The ladies version have new franchises which are also starting to be sold in their own right

They have their own telly rights etc

It’s all going to take time to build up

But it’s good that they have players invested in it and also getting businesses involved

I wonder what on earth typical viewers (Americans) make of someone with a southern English accent doing a fake northern English accent while talking to someone with a real North West English accent; and whether they have any idea what is going on. 🤣

When we were in Oklahoma getting the step daughters brain tumour treated - we went into one of the Wal-Marts, and needed to ask the customer services lass for some info... The lass on the desk as soon as we spoke was like "Oh My gaaawd, you're from Engerlaaand.....I absolutely love you're accent"

The wife's from down south but I was a bit flummoxed as to why the chuff anybody would want to get excited about my northern accent..

Anyway, she showed us to whatever it was we were looking for but not before she's asked if she could listen to us speak a little more.... Weird. :ROFLMAO:

Saw this tweet which was interesting.

On some of the shots I've seen, the ball physics seemed completely off. Like the ball just hitting the ground and stopping when it would normally roll, or visibly show the spin at least rather than just stopping still. Even on my local Trackman range the ball physics look better. Don't think it's going to last if the players don't even trust the software.

I did hear (maybe in this thread to be fair) that Tiger himself has invested into the software they're using, which explains a lot.

It would possibly be better if they just had something like a bespoke TopGolf range, where you don't need to rely on a computer to replicate ball physics. Basically have a:

  • 400 yardish driving range
  • 3-5 greens that can be placed at regular intervals to go to on approach shots, with a Spotlight on the relevant green
  • Allow the greens to move, or the hitting area, to fine tune correct yardages to green
  • Have a lighting system on range to highlight areas that are penalty areas, bunkers or rough on any given hole
  • In hitting area, have tee, fairway, rough and bunker lies
  • to the right of hitting, have your short game area, where you can actually play your short game shots and putts, on a similar green to what they have now, where undulations can be changed
Perhaps some of that is far fetched. But at least you'd trust the ball physics. And if it actually gained much traction and popluarity, you could pack in a "stadium" of fans

And would they get the actual reference?

When I was in Georgia, the "ladies" loved a Home Counties Accent! Its worth the trip!🤣🤣🤣

TGL shouldn't be happening once the Tour Kicks off. It's like Panto. Ok on December and January, outside that, no no...

In fairness, I probably don't get most of the American banter (generally, not just TGL). But that's OK, if you are talking about isloated incidents in a much broader and longer program.

If the entire broadcast of TGL became an hour long show of Rose doing northern accents, I'd wonder what on earth is going on. But if it is just a quick couple of seconds, whatever :)
