Texas Scramble Tomorrow

It's the first time I've played in one of these, and although I know it's not going to be very serious, I was thinking about the best way to play it.

I'm thinking the best player at each shot (drive, iron, putt) should go last as they've got more chance of hitting a safe one if the first 2 are pants, and more chance of hitting a great one if there's already a good one in play.

Does that make sense?

Is there anything else, or am I just sad for thinking about it??

Usually the rules are that the person who's last shot is taken, plays his/her ball first. After that, play in any order.

Some think that the better player should take the next shot to take pressure of the weaker players.

Whatever you decide, don't forget to mark peeps putts. Don't tap in as the hole is then over and someone else may have holed the putt given the chance.

It's a great format and at places I play they have always been fiercly contested - usually won on about 14 under (inc h/cap allowances)

As pants has said, normally whoevers shot is selected marks his ball and takes the first shot after that, and each player has 4 drives with 2 going spare. We never took a short drive until we had no choice.

Tee off can be in any order on any hole so it's whatever you feel like.

As far as I know, it's teams of 3 with 1/10 of combined handicaps.

Low 60's usually wins it looking at past results, with the odd high 50's thrown in.

Got a few weeks of different formats coming up.
Scramble tomorrow, 4BBB next Saturday, Yellowball the week after then 3 clubs + putter (off the ladies tees) the week after that.

Should be fun.

Only played sramble once and loved it. You're over thinking it... the rules are simple: when it's your turn to play hit a beauty!

You might find then Gary that you have to use 6 of your drives each. I know when I have played in fourball texas scrambles you have to play at least 4 of each persons drives. Doesn't half put pressure on the guy who isn't driving particularly well when you get down to about 6 holes to go and you have only used one of his drives up until then!

As per the warning above regarding putting.
When you are all on the green putting from say 20 feet away for birdie, if the first one that putts knocks it up to within an inch of the hole, for Gods sake don't just go and tap his in. It negates everybody elses attempt at birdie as the ball is deemed to be in the hole and you will HAVE to sign for a 4.
Hope that makes sense???

If it's taken seriously R3 then your group is playing it wrong. It's a format designed for ripping into each other generally tossing about. Great fun format.

Well said RB , couldnt agree more. We play enough serious stuff through the year so its nice occasionally just to try the impossible shots with no consequences other than your mates rip the p!ss.

ps its also nice to have a massive birdie/eagle fest

I reckon they should use it for team building excercises, that's if they don't already. It's funny watching the 'worst putter' going last and making the 40 footer... I've never heard roars so loud from 3 people watching a putt drop!

Well that was fun, I really enjoyed it.

Didn't win (60.something was leading when we came in) but 3 under after 4 holes and I thought 'this is easy'.

Couple of bogeys killed it, and only 1 putt made over 10'.

6 birdies, 2 bogeys rest pars less 4.3 = 63.7

It was 5 tee shots each with 3 spare, and with 5 to play we'd only used 2 of mine

Oh, b.t.w. I like to tee off last on the short par 4s.
I learned this tip quite quickly, as a short hitter, if 3 guys are safely down the middle with hybrid/irons, then I can afford to crack a driver down there, if it's good, then that's one of mine bagged.

The last guy doesn't have to lag up Dave. If the first guy finishes 6" away then he marks his ball. The others can have a run at it because the par is a cert.

Why are 3 guys playing safe? When I last played it once we had one safely down the middle out came the big dogs and everyone else blasted it.

Ours are usually mixed social scrambles in the summer over the back or front nine (it varies). I don't mind them but do find they take a bit of time. I usually go for the grip it and rip it approach and hope there are others on the team to bail me out when the glory shot turns to disaster

Unfortunately we only play this once a year in December and its mixed. Last year we had a lady join our group who was a very nice lady but crikey her best drive went about 90 yards as she was about 90 herself (not joking). Tough going into the par 3's with woods for 2nd shots

Of course, you are right. I was thinking early doors (our 2nd + 4th hole, where position beats distance).....later on, it's driver mayhem.

I had explained this, but then thought the story was boring to read, so I deleted it. I guess it makes no sense now. My fault.
