I've been driving pretty well recently but have noticed that ball goes pretty high and that may be costing me a bit of distance.

Looking at the club face, it's clear that the ball is coming off the top half of the club face. I currently use the 39mm pink castle tees and was going to drop down to 31mm white castle tees.

I just wondered how much will this affect the ball flight as, hopefully, the impact should be much closer to the middle of the club face?

It would be easier to put the ball an inch or two back in your stance than to go to white castles, that way you will not be catching it on the up as much, Whites are really low.

Like yourself I tend to chop and change between the pink and white tees and I find you get a much more solid strike from the white tees.

I reckon if you're mostly hitting the ball off the top of the face, you should definitely go lower. Would 8 mm be spot on?
The white castles are probably a bit low for me, but I know folk that tee the ball at that height (or thereabouts) with wooden tees and hit it great.
All depends on your swing really. Give it a whirl.

I set the ball up so that the top of the driver is about half way up the ball. Then I lift the driver so that the ball is in the centre of the clubface and lower it back to the floor. The ball appears aligned towards the toe but this is fine since the driver won't be on the floor when I hit the ball so I'm more likely to find the sweet spot

The "sweet spot" on drivers is something like a centimeter above the center of the clubface. You want the ball to be hitting off the top half of the driver.

If you are driving the ball well (and you are in fact losing distance from the ball going to high, which would obviously need to be proved) then you shouldnt lower your tee height at all.

What it sounds like you need is a driver with less loft, reducing the backspin and the launch angle.

TBH hitting the ball too high with the driver is usually not a bad problem to have...

Clean the driver and put a little tape on the face. Hit a good few shots and have a look after each shot to see where the spot is. Suggest you forget "set height" tees and go for std tees that you can set high and low. I would not change your ball position just the height you peg it up. I peg the ball up a little higher down wind and lower into the wind.

Worth a thought... I had a lesson a few weeks ago and asked my pro the same question. He said its more to do with the weight transfer. If the ball is going excessively high, then your timing could be out and more your weight on your back foot.

I always thought you should tee the ball high to encourage a upward hit on the ball, launching higher and carrying more.
A lower tee height would make you hit down more, increasing spin and thereby losing distance.

Been messing with the pink & white tees myself recently after a few skying :D 'incidents' at the start of the season with pink tees, I think my driver maybe marginal for the pink tee.

Now using pink tees to get the ball high in the air when wind is at my back.

White tees if wind head on and need a lower ball flight.

Works a treat for now. Might go back to the one tee when i have more confidence as the season progresses.

I believe that to be true but, with the pink tees, I am hitting upwards just on the top half of the club face. My thoughts were whether using a white castle tee would give me an impact nearer to the centre of the club face.

This is a no brainer.........if you want to hit the ball off the centre of the club and your hitting it off or near the top then tee it up a little lower.

HRC99, have a watch of this video.

Like you i was always under the impression the ball should be tee'd high, but by dropping my tee height around 10mm i gained 15-20 yards, It would seem later spec drivers are designed with a s/spot lower in the club face so dont need to be tee'd high.

Im currently tee'ing the R11 with about 5mm showing above the clubhead at address.

Id try the whites, what do you have to lose. Also Improvemygolf.co.uk do reusable face contact stickers, may be worth checking them out to see where you are striking the ball.
