Or did I make the sensible choice?

I went to Westerham GC today to take part in the Ping Demo Day, and to take advantage of the Ping offer to give me a brand new driver for nowt.

I had a slightly different experience to Homer in as much as I felt a bit rushed to get on with it and to give everyone else a chance to have a go. Don't get me wrong, noone was anything other than totally polite, but I could hear lots of 'whispered' conversations about running late, and keeping on track, etc.

So I only got to try the drivers.

It went a bit like this :

I was asked a few questions about my game ( h/c 18, slicer, short off the tee, etc ) and the immediate suggestion was the K15.

I was rather hoping to hit a few with my current driver to see how it compared with the Ping stuff, but what the heck.

Ok, so on with the K15. It's ugly, and very light, and very, very ugly. But it looked easy to hit, so I whacked one off. Morgan, the man from Ping, gave me some numbers. Basically, given the sort of numbers we were trying to achieve, the K15 was right in the middle of them, first shot. So I hit a few more. It's very easy to hit, and you have to put a bad swing on it to slice it.

If you are a 90mph, 18 h/c, middle aged swinger, like me, it's the perfect club.

So I asked to try the I15.

But that's for better golfers, came the reply. So I tried it anyway. 1st shot you could tell it was a good club. But after a few hits it was obvious that the good hits were slight better than the K15, but the worse hits were a lot worse.

The stats were not dissimilar to the K15, so the recommendation was the K15, still.

Ok, but can I try the G15? Quick glance at the queue, very slight intake of breath, then switch on the smile, and 'of course'. Immediately it put too much backspin on the ball, so I rejected it straight away.

Overall the recommedation is for the K15. But it's ugly, says I, and a good hit off the I15 feels better. So I try the K15 with the shaft from the I15. By now Morgan has totally given up on worrying about the time, and is encouraging me to take as long as I need, which, conversely, makes me feel even more guilty about delaying everyone else.

It doesn't work, so back to the K15 in it's original setup. The numbers are perfect.

Before I make a final choice, I just want to try a few more shots with the I15.

So I hit my last 6 shots of the day. Inconsistantly. I walk off the tee saying that I've tried them both, and I'll trust Morgan's advice.

He's been suggesting the K15, all the time, but looking at the computer for the final glance, it has suddenly changed it's advice to the I15.

So which choice should I make?

A) The K15 is far and away the most consistant of the two and it is designed to help with my weaknesses.

B) The I15 is a much better looking club. When I hit a good shot it feels much better than the K15, but anything other than a good swing is slicing badly.

K15 is what you need. Will help you drop the handicap and when you do you will have more confidence to hit the driver more consistently meaning you can upgrade to something better :)

I don't think I'd be looking for a full custom fit at a demo day. By the nature of the event it's a marketing event to get as many punters to try out the clubs in a fairly limited window of opportunity.

I'd go for a full C/F session later (if I still believed in C/F that is ;) )

I had a similar problen, I have been playing with a Taylor Made CGB max Limited Edition and recently, although I won a big competition at my club, felt that if I didnt put my best swing on the driver I ended up in more trouble.I went to a local pro and tried a Callaway FT9 Driver and it just goes ... even with my less than Sunday best swing. I think that the one thats easiest to hit is the only choice, your not picking a wife - looks are not so important! And anyway, with a driver you can put something over her head most of the time!

I'd rather have a consistant ugly driver than a stick i hit right 1 out of every 100.

Surely there should be an option c, try some other drivers as it sounds neither of the Pings were ideal for you.

I really struggle with clubs that I dont find aesthetically pleasing, Id go and try some different drivers from different manufacturers to try and achieve the aesthetics and the performance.

I would always go for performance over looks any day (just dont tell the wife), i have the FTi and it is a brute of a club but works well for my game by keeping the ball in play which is the most important thing for me.

MD Superstrong......Dont kick it into touch just because its a budget club i would advise anyone to try this club against any other top of the range driver and then deside for yourself if do i want to spend £100 or £200+

IMO id rather spend the £100 ive saved on a new wedge or a few new polo shirts

What I'd like to have done, if I'd had the time, was compare the performance of both clubs against my current driver, and then maybe look at a fairway wood, or a hybrid, or even a wedge or two instead, if there was little difference.

But either way, I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth. Ping have been extrememly generous offering me one of these clubs anyway - I'm more than happy to take them up on it.

I thought the K15 was so easy to hit last week but went too high for me and there wasn't a spec amongst the demos that really rectified this. I wanted a 9.5 head to compate with the I15 I hit but they only had the 10.5 or the 12 degree. It is however a peach to hit despite looking pretty big and unwieldy behind the ball. It reminds me a lot of the original Big Bertha's

Nice to see such a great response. Thanks guys

Over 90% say go for the K15.

Which proves it.

I am a tart. And I've never thought that before. :o

I thought long and hard about the K15, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. The negatives just outweighed the positives.

The I15 just looks better, it feels more like a golf club, and you can feel the ball coming off the clubhead soooo much better. And it sounds better too.

All you have to do is put a good swing on it.

The K15, however, is just ugly. Well it's not just ugly. It's light. Too light. It just feels as if you're shaking a stick at the ball. And the ball doesn't go any further than my current driver. So what's the use in switching from a perfectly good driver, to a perfectly adequate driver that looks and feels worse, and doesn't produce any better results.

If I want to hit the ball 220-230 yards, I've got my Benross.

If I want to hit the ball 240-250 yards, the I15 will give me enough club to do it, I've just got to learn how to swing the club better.

I hate to say it, but I think Ping have got it wrong with the K15. It's going to be fine for a total beginner. But for players who just aren't particularly good, like me, but have played for a while, it's not good looking enough, it doesn't give enough feedback off the clubhead, it's too light. It also doesn't go far enough to counter all the negatives. If it felt dodgy but went miles, I'd have had it.

It didn't.

The I15 looked me in the eye and winked at me when I picked it up. It responded to my waggle with an expectant wiggle back. When I put it behind the ball, it just sat there quietly, and knew what it was I wanted. It let me know exactly what it needed off of me.

And then it sliced 30 yards. :o

It could be the start of a beautiful friendship. Or maybe just an unhealthy, needy, desperate affair.
