Evening all,
Been doing a little homework lately on getting better rythym and tempo and hopefully swinging to 80-90% rather than going balls out trying to knock the name off the little white fellow. My practice swing is always lovely and fluid and free but put that blasted white orb in the way and its like i want to knock it into outer space. When i do slow down my results are much better...But how do you keep it consistent?
Has anybody got any good tips for swinging within yourself?

And also if a player slows down swing speed to get better rythym would this warrant a shaft change in clubs if they were originally fitted for a different speed or can a reduction in speed actually increase distance.

What swing speed would a DG S300 shaft sit between.
Iv come across the term swing easy to hit further alot in my search but how Easy is Easy.

I have the same problem and it's something I've been making a huge effort on, basically I needed to slow my swing down with only a 80% swing. The results, much straighter and just as long.

I'm still prone to speeding up and overswinging when im under pressure, not concentrating or playing with someone who hits the ball a mile (i try to keep up).

I'm making sure I get over the range once or twice a week with just tempo and the take away in mind (not the curry type). It feels like i'm putting in a half swing even though the club is nearly parallel at the top of the swing.

I use a CD from here which has helped enormously. I might even be able to get a copy burned if you want to PM me

Thanks for the offer Homer...
I just had a look at the site there at 15 dollars its reasonable....Im going to buy it myself as there are a few lads i play with that may benefit from it also....
It comes highly recommended from you
you so. ;)

Many people try to hit the ball so hard that during their uber fast backswing they actually throw themselves off balance, don't even swing properly and even lose sight of the ball completely sometimes.

Swing within yourself doesn't mean to take your foot off the gas, simply swing so that you remain balanced and in control - repetition is the key to this game.

Swing balanced is a better swing thought than swing easy.

Tempo was brought up at my last lesson, cant believe the difference slowing things down has made to my game.

I've also been using the tour tempo tracks and it's made a real difference. You can also get the tracks as an iphone or itouch app now.

I simply use the words "back...and...through" and I've been training myself to think the words at a certain tempo that works for me.

Its also good for clearning your head of any other swing thoughts.

I never use the phrase swing slower. It just ruins the flow of the swing.
I prefer to use the phrase "swing smoother".
This allows you to still be agressive but with more control.
Think of Ernie, smooth as silk but loaded with power. :D

Being 6'4", built like an ox with forearms that are the size of small trees, might help as well.

I can swing as smooth as you like, but I'll still only just hit it outside my shadow.

I'm conceously swinging slower/smoother since recovering from a back injury and so far this year I have played better than ever.

That said, after a few good holes I'm noticing myself swinging harder and have to try and keep myself in check!

I was really struggling with tempo early this year. Coach had me hitting 50 yard pitches for hours, then he'd let me go up to 60 yards and so on. I now got tempo back under control and never feel like I'm trying to welly it anymore. Practice swing consists of a 1/4 to 1/2 swing to feel the tempo and then away we go.

What I do is get two clubs out the bag. Say a 6 and 7 iron. Firstly try to hit your 7 iron as far as you can without throwing the kitchen sink into it. You should notice it's not a bad distance but feels awful. Now take your 6 iron and try to hit it the same distance as the 7 iron went. You should notice a smoother tempo, probably a shorter back swing too. This aids control, balance, accuracy and tempo. It's playing within yourself.
Also you notice that because the ball striking is better, you find the distance with the 6 iron increases a little too.
Sometimes it feels like the backswing is really short but if you film yourself it's actually in a great position as most people overswing without even knowing it.

It works for me anyway. (when I'm not playing like a complete idiot)
:)

Sounds like a good plan to me iGolf. ;)
