I've recently lost 6 1/2 stones and gone from a 45 inch waist to a 34 inch. I'm happy about it but it has improved my golf in some ways but impeded it in other ways. I'm fitter and started carrying again, I'm not knackered on the 12th onwards now so more able to keep my concentration and swing for the full 18. All this is great but as I no longer have to swing around a large belly my swing is a different shape and not the familiar one I had, really flat similar to a baseball swing.
I'm struggling with the driver, I used to come really upwards into the ball, now it is more up and down and it feels much different and consistancy is a problem.
I have booked a block of lessons to try and find a new better more consistant swing. What should I expect the pro to teach me?
I know it will be hard graft, swing changes take time to bed in and become natural, the pro thinks with a bit of practice I should get my handicap from 11.5 to at least 7 next year. Any thoughts?

Firstly, congrats on the weight loss, 6 1/2 st is a great achievement.

About your swing... if you were happy with it before can you not still swing flat even though you don't have to?

Great effort of the weight loss

Id expect any lessons to look to remove any compensations you had previously made, more than likely to focus on making sure the swing is on the right plane

It's really difficult when there is nothing to swing around, if you imagine a 45 inch waist then it's suddenly (well if you call over a 5 month period sudden) gone my hands hang closer to my body and it's not really practical to try and put my arms in the same position every time, it wouldn't work mate. I need a new set up position which will inevitably lead to a new swing shape.

What will also happen is your range of movement will increase enormously, so you may need to keep a watchful eye on your rotation.
Here's what I suggest.
If you have the V1 software, load up your swing video and select the V tool.
Place it as shown in the picture below. One line up the shaft and the other through your shoulder then see if you can swing in that area.

Congrats on the weight loss and hope you get your swing sorted. BTW how did you lose so much so quickly?

The Cambridge diet, it's not for the faint hearted but then neither is needing to lose almost 7 stone. It works but it is hard going and very monotinous. Worth it though.

Well done on the weight loss DB, excellent dedication. I lost about 11 stone a few years ago, it dramatically altered my swing. Before i lost weight i was a very 'handsy' player, as my 52" stomach was too large to rotate. Due to my bulk i actually had a quick swing speed, over 100mph withbthe driver. Following the weight loss, i developed a huge over swing as i was now able to turn as well as making my usual handsy swing. I've had to work hard to control my overswing whilst focusing on rotating and better weight balance. it has taken a few years to fully adjust to the change of body shape ( and loss of swin speed ). Most importantly though i'm now a much better player and obviously far healthier. ( apart from the 2 prolapsed discs in my back that have stoped me from playing since september and on the list for an operation.)

You've done the right thing by finding a pro you can work with, explain the changes to your body shape and enjoy the opportunity to get better. As i said, i found i could turn far more and needed to focus on using my bigger muscles and timing my swing far more than before. I am convinced that you will find the game more enjoyable and easier - though don't be suprised if you lose a little distance.

Well done again on shifting the weight, i'm really chuffed for you.

Great job!!!

I would have to assume that if you had the skill before to get to 11.5, even though there will be changes to make you will be more than capable of making them.

Great work and big congrats on your effort

I think you've done the right thing getting lessons again. Keep positive and remember that you might go backwards to go forwards but I'm sure with a more athletic physique you'll reap the dividends in your game

I've already done the congratulations on the weight loss thing, it's still an awesome achievement mate.

I firmly believe that since the weight loss your irons are no longer compatible with your game and particularly your intended new swing. If I were you I would be looking toward buying new irons mate!

I have money waiting for the G20's!!!

Seriously DB, I'm sure your pro will sort you out with the new swing but it will take a bit of time and effort to groove it. We'll have a few sessions at the range over the closed season to urge each other on, to check your swing and also to allow you to hand over the now naturally redundant irons!;)

A flap of loose skin tucked under each armpit helps with connection.

Only joking honest  Well done mate, with your determination you will figure it out.

As everyone else has said. Thats a great effort. The doc told me to lose 4 stone. The doc however is built like a whippet! I am going for a loss of 2 this year. I will concentrate on more exercise as I believe that (within reason) the diet is OK. So its running for me from next week.

You are doing the right things - making the effort to go and see someone who knows. Secondly, if you are as determined to get the HCP down as you were to lose thta sort of weight, then it will tumble, but as has been said, concentrate on the chages and not where the ball goes.

Well done and good luck at the same time!

thats amazing, theres 2 people on this thread that have lost the equivalent weight of......erm.......2 people:eek:

Outstanding fellas, simply outstanding
