Well, even though it looks like my playing days MAY be over for the rest of the year, whilst I was off dropping my clubs into my locker yesterday I had a peek around the pro shop to see if they had a 5 wood around.

They had a long G10 5 wood, so I traded in my G10 3 wood and bought it.

Hopefully this will give me more options on our course with the yardage more suited to some of the tee shots on some of the 4's and one of the long 3's.

Now just have to wait to give it a hit. Anyone swear by their 5 wood and prefer using it to their 3 wood off the deck?

Yep, sold the 3w to make room for another wedge. I prefer my 5w in any and all situations to the 3w. My 5w is probably as long too, as I hit it better, and straighter.

I'm hoping I made the right choice. I wasn't hitting my 3 wood at all off the tee, and ceratinly no good off the fairway.

The 5 wood should allow me to hit a nice full shot down the fairway on our dogleg 3rd, without fear of hitting it too far, and also give me a full shot into our long par 3, whereas the 3 would often be too long and I would need to take some off it, which would always seem to make me fluff the shot.

Really looking forward to being able to try it out.

Hi,
Took out my 5 woood as i was hitting the 4 utility almost as far and the 3 wood means i can reach all the par 5's so i would rather have that in the bag.
Mike

I regularly take my 3 wood out to accommodate an extra wedge. To be honest there is only one hole (the 4th) where I'd think about a 3 wood off the tee and with the best will in the world and a Sunday best drive all the par 5's are out of reach at this time of year for me so a 3 wood off the deck doesn't seem like a high % shot.

I'm another who got rid of my 3 wood and have not replaced it. My steelhead 5 is great from the light rough and as it has a compact head really gives it a nip from the fairway.

I has a G10 3 wood previously and I don't think I hit one really satisfying shot with it.

So far I have had no situation where I really missed having a 3 wood in the bag.

by the posts already it seams like its horses 4 courses so 2 speak, also its a confidence thing we all have are favorite club,me personally i prefer my 3 wood off the tee but my 5 off the deck dont know why, maybe just a feel thing.

I wouldn't give a 3 wood space, limited use off of the tee and a sod to hit off of the fairway. I prefer a 5 as it gives me less distance off the tee's and a better chance of hitting it well of the grass. Better option IMO.

I would look at 4 woods if I could find a decent TM version but most places I know only stock the standard 3 and 5 woods. I know the R9 can supposedly be adjusted to play as a 4 wood but I'm not a fan of the R9 club or adjustable technology

I'll jump in to defend the 3 wood. Lovely to hit off the tee or off the grass. Wouldn't be without it. But wouldn't ditch the 5 wood either - I'd have to drop the driver which I can't hit much further than the 3 anyway

For almost all this season I have been using a five wood all the time, for tee shots and longer fairway shots as well. At our course hitting fairways is a priority and at least I have been closer to them this year. I have not lost a lot of distance off the tee but accuracy was helping my game. I previously teed off with a three wood and they were getting worse. I do have a driver in my bag, keep it for when I need maximum distance when taking a penalty drop of 2 clublengths for relief :), so would recomend this course of action to anybody

I cant understand all these 5 woods and 4 woods going about!!!

IMO the 3 wood is the perfect club as it can be used off the tee the majority go just about as far as a driver you can hit them off the grass. you can also use it as a chipper round the green

For me the 5 wood option just leaves too much off a gap from my driver and i can hit my 3 iron as far as my 5 wood.

Having said all that mind i still own one :D :D

Anyone swear by their 5 wood and prefer using it to their 3 wood off the deck?

Yes. I rarely hit a 3 wood of the fairway, unless the distance is spot on. I always lay up with a 5 wood by choice.
If I've got 230+ to go, I'd not bother with trying to get home....except in a fun game maybe or a really wide hole!!!

I expect to hit my 5 wood good every time. I'd rate my 3 wood as less than 75%..... :D
