Hiya folks, I am in my late 20s, am moving to the Surrey area and am looking to join a new club. I play off scratch and am looking for a club primarily with great facilities (perhaps even a grass range?). Ideally the golf course would also be nice. The research I have done thus far, has led me to feel quite intimidated by very long waiting lists and the importance of who you know, when it comes to approaching the nicer clubs of Surrey.

I am just wondering whether anyone in the Surrey area would have any suggestions of golf clubs that might meet what I am looking for. I think it is worth noting that I am willing to spend a few years waiting if it means a nicer membership.

Cheers!

Surrey is a fairly sized county with a semi moving substantial car park running through it. If you could narrow down which particular part of Surrey, it might help people give you worthwhile suggestions

I once spent 3 years on a waiting list in the Woking area and that was back in the early 80s.
Your handicap may well get you a bit of a bump up the list.

People say Windlesham is great. Not sure if they have a waiting list but suspect most decent clubs will do. Mate is a member of Leatherhead but I have not played there. Clandon Regis has availability when I last checked. Keep meaning to play Sutton Green, in Woking. Have heard it is good and appears to have membership availability. As above, Surrey is a large county.

Windlesham is a good track, Clandon Regis is ok, Sutton Green I didn't think much of, especially as you drive past West Hill......

Great suggestion. I am moving to Woking, and I think something within 20 mins would be ideal.

At least if you cannot get membership quickly you are moving to an area with good courses on a pay and play basis such a Hoe Bridge (Old Woking), The Downshire (Bracknell),

As to membership

I think already mentioned Sutton Green,
Some others not mentioned

+ Foxhills, West Byfleet, Mill Ride (Ascot)
Camberley Heath

Just join The Wisley, you won't regret it! You just need to buy the share of an existing member for around £100k. 😬

I am a member of Guildford and could be a good option to explore. Has several memberships that could suit your needs depending how often you'll get out to play each month.

Surrey is a big county. I live in Surrey but my club is 10 minutes away in Hampshire.

Think you need to look at clubs near to home rather than an hour drive away.

West Surrey has some great courses nearby, Hankley, Hindhead, Liphook, Blackmoor, West Surrey and Farnham.

I know we have spaces at the moment, great practice facilities, so I am told :). And a very decent course.

I always thought Camberley Heath looked nice it’s on golf life/jimmy bullard YouTube quite a lot

No it isn't. Several people have claimed Surrey is a large county, sorry to pick on you Wanabe! It's 35th (out of 48) when ranking England's ceremonial counties by size.
It does have a large population though (11th biggest), and more than 100 courses are affiliated to Surrey Golf. No 'single county' union has more courses than Surrey.
So, choosing a course is hard, but not because Surrey is large - because it isn't.

Surely Yorkshire and Lancashire (both single counties) have many more clubs than Surrey?

Having just checked Yorkshire have 180, Lancashire have 141 - Surrey has 120.

Yorkshire golf union covers four counties (N Yorks, W Yorks, S Yorks and the E Riding).
Lancashire covers three (Lancs, Gtr Manchester and Merseyside).
That's why I specified 'single county' union in the comment that you highlighted.
