Stuck in your ways or following the herd? Balls question.

I'm a gear snob/tart, but one that knows his own mind enough to make his own mind up about something.

I'm no sheep I don't use Pro-v1 balls I see no reason to. I have used Titleist balls though. When I first started I was bought Titleist PTS so~lo balls which to be honest although alright I saw no point in using. I instead tried Pinnacle Exception balls when they first came out & was impressed. This was before they got re-packaged & before they went uber expensive. At the time I also tried Maxfli Noodle & was in too minds about. I stayed with the Pinnacle Exception until I decided that £20 for a box of Titleist NXT-Tour wasn't too much for the quality & feel I wanted. Though there was an interim period where I was using Dunlop DDH balls which were £8 for 24 balls. They were hard but you could putt with them & could control them too once you were used to them.

Infact there is still nothing wrong with NXT Tour imho for a player like myself. Did have a mess about with various Callaway balls everything from Warbirds thru Big Bertha Blu & Big Bertha red balls right up to Tour56. Now there was a lovely ball. Found the HX Hots a bit hard & take some getting used to but do work well when you do get used to them, but Warbirds though hard putt well enough. I did discover a ball from Maxfli I thought was fantastic. & after using Warbirds & Big bertha balls were lovely the Maxfli Fire Tour. Great ball, but not that readlily available. Though the standard Maxfli-fire was easier to find. Used these for quite some time, until I could not get any more. It was then I realised that the same layer build makeup was available with the Taylormade TP-Burner, albeit with a when they first came out, I started using the TP Burner, but was satisfied enough to stick with the TP-Burner.

I did move over to the TP Red when my game & especially ball striking improved enough to make the most out of the TaylorMade TP Red. I used a standard TM Burner ball over the winter. I have also tried some Srixon balls over the years, can't stand their distance ball but found the Z-UR a nice ball but they were being phased out at the time & had I tried the Z-URS & could have warrented the extra expense I might have gone with them, but the TaylorMade offerings were what I desired, though Srixon Trispeed were a convincingly quality feel yet with a forgiving nature.

Though I don't think I/we need spend big bucks for balls that we like.

AD333 & DX2 are now offering some reasonable offerings. The original WilsonStaff DX2 balls were bullets, but this recent re-incarnation of the DX2 soft is actually worth playing & at a good price.

Having recently tride three offerings from Bridgestone B330RX +e7 & Treosoft I think the B330RX are a great ball which I could easily be seen using come summer or even mid-late spring. But Srixon Z-URS is a very pleasant suprise to me, whether enough to ween me off the Taylormade TP Red I don't know.

I did buy a couple of boxes of Treosoft for Celtic Manor but when I tried them last week I wasn't that impressed, as they are no better than Srixon Soft feel.

There are some balls I'd happily use any day of the week some I'd use all the time because they are priced right & can still get what I want from. And then there are others I'm happy to pay the price for the advantage & the feel & confidence I get from them.

But overall the one thing I don't like doing is using the ball everyone else uses... usually.

For instance I've decided to use Dunlop 65 balls at Celtic Manor. Have now got 4 boxes of the retro packed blighters. Not tried them in anger yet, so the first few putts on the practice putting green at Celtic Manor & the drive on the First will be the first outing they get. Feel soft enough off the putter face on a few putts taken in the lounge. never one to go with the flow, or follow the trends. I like to set them.

I definitely prefer using premium gear though, I just can't help thinking if say I bought a £40 MD wedge 'I wonder what I'm missing compared to a vokey' feeling that the extra £30 must go somewhere.
What if someone let you try out an MD along with a Vokey and at worst the MD was equal to the Titleist?, would you still feel biased to the more expensive brand?
Im not trying to provoke any negative reactions, Im just wondering how open folk are to trying new kit and allowing other companies a foot on the rung to help competition and bring prices down overall.

Balls.....um.....I use anything unless it turns out rubbish/x-rock hard etc.

I don't use Titleist balls any more. I actually "like" saying "Top-Flite or Wilson/Staff" on the 1st tee.

I've never understood players that say "you might as well use the best ball available".....because unless you are good, the extra spin with premium balls is probably detrimental to your game......

If I use a spin ball, I start missing more fairways.....simple.....

As for kit, the more unusual the better for me.....APART from my long-standing use of Callaway woods.

have used several balls over the last couple of years last year mainly z-urs also some tp reds. got a good deal on some tx4s so will try them. if not in a comp will use what i find within reason, all cheap balls in range bag. i changed my mind this winter when i found a b-330s. on a par 4, took the big stick and hit a topflite, wet cold winter day. average shot. picked up the 330 and gave it a headache and could really feel it compress under the strike, and if anything the best feel from any driven ball i had hit. brought some next time i was out and looking forward to longer tees and better greens. these balls feel soft to touch. but i have no problems using any of the balls i mentioned, because i know if things are going wrong its in my head, too self critical, missed 5 easy birdie putts last weekend, 2 i would have given in match play. may be a bit snobby, but i do prefer a slightly more expensive ball, but am looking at changing the r7 xds for something cheaper but custom fitted, think we pay far too much for brand names, but if it feels right use it

I do like to use the same balls all the time as I think it is important to get the same feel around the green. I use Nike sft-2, you get 2 dozen for 17quid from JJB, they are quite soft and do scuff a bit but for less than a quid a ball I think it is well worth it.
When I took golf up my missus bought me a set of clubs, I didn't ask her where she got them and as I had a few lessons with a pro and she didn't say anything then I thought they must be fine. I struggled to get below 24 handicap and I asked my missus where she had got them, she told me it was from Costco and it was about £150 quid all in (including bag, three woods, putter etc). I decided that was justification enough to spend on some irons (Cobra S9s) which I got custom fitted and went to steel shafts, my handicap dropped to 18 in two months!!
I think you get what you pay for, just trying to justify spending £200 on a driver now!!

Once summer comes, out come the ProV1s. I still think they are the best ball for me. I don't loose many, I have very little side spin, (although this years swing target is a draw), and I love them from 150 yards in. I don't see why so many people have a down on them, although it would be interesting to quantify this on h/cap. To me, they are worth the money, although, with 50 odd new ones in the cupboard, none of which I have bought, the money doesn't come into it.

If i being honest i would use a pro v1 over the b330-s anyday if i didnt kill the ball on every shot.

The b330-s last longer and performs just as well thats why i use them

No worries about provoking a negative reaction, I know your posts well enough to understand that! Anyway no offence taken etc etc :D

In answer to your question though, yes, I would still feel biased towards the Vokey if they both performed identically. (I have actually never used either!) It is stupid I know because I would most probably just be wasting £30 but to give you an idea of where I am with giving companies a foot on the laddder rung (Great analogy  ;) ) I am unlikely to be the sort of person who would. I guess I am a brand snob. I just firmly believe you get what you pay for and want the best. Naive maybe, however it's just the way I am. It is the mental security I would gain if not the actual performance of the club that would most likely swing it- if i knew I had a premium wedge I would be confident I have done everything possible on the club front to make my golf the best it can be.

I hope that makes sense!

The question remains though, if you owned a Vokey (circa £90 for instance), and bought a new wedge (circa £150 as an example), and you started to shank it, would you blame the new wedge? Is it ever the clubs fault? How can a more expensive club be a problem and lead to a lack of confidnce?

Oh, and I have solved it for the time being. I swing too much from the inside. Every thing is smiley today.

I use NXT-Extreme's all the time, when i first started i used to use anything that i found. I then progressed onto Nike distance-softs but found these to be quite hard actually!

My brother then tried to get me to use Pro V's which, for a 28 handicapper as i was then, was just ridiculous. One day though i found a virtually brand new NXT-Tour and used that for about 8 holes and i loved the way it felt. Nice off the tee but soft around the greens.

At the range one day the pro (i bought pretty much every box of NXT-Tours off him) offered me 3 NXT-Extreme's for free to try out and i preffered them so thats what i use now.

Apart from some dodgy freebies i've had as presents thats all i've ever tried. Never hit a srixon or a bridgestone or a taylormade!

I would suggest everyone try sleeves of various balls to find out what they like for there game.

The Bridgestone b330-s fly low which i like but stop like s*** to a shovel

I think Srixon are likely to take the Titleist crown over the next year, as judging by the amount of pro's now using Srixon & the fact that nealy all the local golf shops & proshops are stocking the entire range of srixons in shed loads on the shelves. One local shop has virtually entirely gone Srixon & Bridgestone this season, with hardly a titleist in sight on any shelf.

I belive Srixons are the best selling for us hackers you just get more of a ball for the pound

NXT tours £20 notes or AD333 for 15 do the math

Srixon do make good balls i just wont try anything else till my ball stock runs down

I used the ZURS about this time last year was a good ball did not scuff up but i stuck in my ways with 5 dozen bridgestones once they gone i will have a look around maybe the z-stars?

I wont be paying 35 notes for Titleists again

If you play the nxt's have a go with the bridgestone b330-rx Cernunnos likes them.i like the idea of a premium ball what compresses at slower swing speeds

If you have bought 5 dozen, that is about 3 years worth of balls, it will be a long time before you look at another ball.

I have never understood how a magazine comp, win a years worth of balls, can be 12 dozen. That would do me for about 5 years.

Maybe it's just me.

Love the feel of the Z-Star, but the Z-URS suits my game better.

Have tried the Bridgestone B330RX which feels really soft, not as soft as a Z-Star, but softer than a Z-URS, but the B330 flies the same way Z-URS do. I think the B330 might have a slight edge. But the Z-URS can now be found for upto a fiver less than the Bridgestone B330 balls. Though when B330 balls are £28 - £29 a dozen I wouldn't complain too much.

Now, apparently, though its of little interest to me, Tiger Woods actually uses Bridgestone balls & simply has them sprayed up as Nike balls. Whether this is true or not I don't know. But its the sort of thing that might be true.

I think Srixon are likely to take the Titleist crown over the next year,

If you want a bet on taking the top spot on Tour I will happily offer odds....how many players on Tour do you think play Srixon compared to Titleist? I would say Nike, TM and Callaway are ahead of Srixon....

If you are talking about choppers balls in the UK then you may be right as I believe that is what Srixon are setting out to do but not through being a better ball but through selling better 'value' balls.....the UK/European market is so miniscule that Titleist probably really couldn't care less.....
