Decided to track my stats today for the first time. Just to give me more of an idea of what I need to prioritise working on. I tracked fairways hit, GIR, number of putts and sand saves. Which worked out at 10, 8, 39 and 1 respectively. Anything else I should be taking note of? Unfortunately I managed a miserable 3 3 putts and even a 4 putt out there today, which isn't great nor the norm for me. Anyone else track rounds like this? Going to try and get plenty more rounds done like this, even though it can get a bit tedious at times I'm sure. Is any of the figures I tracked stupidly high for an 18 hc? What would you be looking to work on given these results? Anyone that wishes to post your own stats for a bit of comparison handicap wise is more than welcome. Would be interesting to see where the differences lay.

Cheers

Logging stats is fine but it's what you do with them that matters.
Take your putting....what's the reason for the 3 and 4 putts..?
Bad putting or being too far from the hole?
If you're too far from the hole, why?
Poor iron play or were you in a tight spot and making the green was a good shot..?
So was it the driving that out you in the poor spot..?
I've stopped keeping stats as I found they posed more questions than they answered....

Poor distance control on the putts today, normally I'm pretty confident of 2 putting from a lot of locations on the green. Being so far from the pin didn't help. But at an 18 hcp I'm not really at the stage to be flying them in there to inside 10 foot every time. My driver was good, when I missed a fairway with it it wasn't by miles or in the really thick stuff. Yeah they pose a lot of questions, can see exactly where you are coming from. They pose that many questions that's basically what led me to posting this. Even with 20 rounds of stats under my belt I'm unsure whether I will even be able to interpret them to the point of it being worth while. Was interesting to see the stats in black and white though

think it's good that stats are being looked at no doubt it can help to identify what stuff maybes prioritize in training practice

just from a cursory look here seems it's maybes the games at the stage where within reason getting off the tee-box in a reasonable ways is being achieved to a level the index would suggest it should be

so looks like the ways forwards at this stage maybes is in training practice looking at irons & scoring clubs into targets - so simulating target practice to various distances with pw to 5i's plus the pw to gap to sand wedges distances in as the part of training practice that gets majored on timewise with just a small amount of drivers, 3 metals so the major time 75% is working to get the GIR plus importantly distance to the pin in a ways better shape

analyze why those seconds in ain't so close - like is it often times distance control so lot of 'shorts' to green or pin but less misses off target leftfield/rightfield that hit the distance to the pin - leftfield/rightfield either both or one more than the other give some indication that an issue could be face angle control etc that kinda stuff

plus folks should always be spending a whole bunch of time chipping, pitching from 50 yards in and maikng that practice a competition of having a score - number of times can get down in 2 out of 20 attempts - keep score week to week there's a competition target to aim at which also puts training practice under pressure similar to what takes place out in play

then there's the putting side - ever had putting lessons? - so is the hold in the hands on the handle is the best it could be - whats the 'length' control of the stroke like
what's posture like
is the posture/stance through the stroke 'still' enough or is there some unwanted motion there
are the hands pretty quiet - is the arm structure through the stroke stable
ball position
what's the aim like, what's the face like at address

all that kinda stuff - if not had a putting lesson would be a good ways to go for sure
if had one is it time for a review

Cheers coach, what you have said there makes a lot of sense. As for distance, something I haven't had done which I plan to is gap testing for my exact yardages so not working off rough yardages i should be more accurate. As for putting I have never actually had a lesson. I did listen in on one a few weeks back whilst sat outside the 19th next to the putting green. A lot of talk was about getting the ball rolling end over end and not using the wrists. But a pendulum motion with the shoulders. Which is something I have been trying to do. But I will certainly go for a putting lesson. My short game I practise twice a week for around an hour and half. And has come on leaps and bounds in the past 2 months. Cheers for the reply!

What are you using to track the stats? Try downloading Scoresaver2 which will then set target numbers for the main areas (GIR, FIR, putts etc) against your handicap and these then change as your handicap goes up and down. The only issues I have is it doesn't track distances of putts or strokes gained but as a free download it's pretty functional

I tried to take some stats earlier this year. The usual GIR, FIR and putts. But also tried to get approach distance from fairway and distance to the pin when on the green. The fairway was fine as I had my GPS so could just jot down the number. Distance to the pin was really just a guess without walking it off but couldn't do that in a comp. Eventually gave up as it was taking my focus away from actually playing the shots. I really need to get game golf or something that does all the stat keeping for you as you go, all you need is to tag the box.

I'm waiting on the book, every shot counts arriving in the post and I believe that it is about stats and has way to track stats so might start again after reading it.

Stats are a great way to get a handle on where your game is but take care with the interpretation. Use the numbers to then drill down into the detail if possible - if you miss fairways, are the misses predominantly short, long, left or right? Are putts short or too long? To do this you might want to record this type of additional info for a few rounds and then reassess.

Also, remember that stats don't tell the whole story - the link between each element such as GIR and the overall score isn't that strong (I've done the maths) and is a decent indication at best. In my day job I use stats to improve industrial/pharmaceutical processes and the advice I give everyone is that the stats are only a tool to begin to understand and improve the process. The rest is data, graft, data and occasional intuition. And data;)

FWIW, my golfing stats from the past 13 years (handicap has varied from 5 to 1) for the average round are:
