Having just read Bobirdie's report on his Turnberry round.
For those who haven't read it yet he said that the starter explained the rough was wild and the deepest it's ever been.

I was wondering how the rough at courses around the country was faring.

I read the report of the recent Ayrshire Team Championship around Kilmarnock Barassie. It alluded to how tough the rough was and many low / scratch players were scoring high 70s and in to the 80s.

At our own place the rough is well up and often described as brutal.

Has the cold weather early in the year and then a fairly damp spell followed by decent warm weather been the perfect storm for the growth of the rough.

Ours is quite long in places (knee deep+) where during the winter it would be only maybe 4-5 inches deep.
I think most courses let it grow out to reward straight shots more. Does slow the game down if too many go into it.

how close is this brutal rough to the fairway? most of the clubs ive played have been fine. nothing to cry about !

We have a reasonable strip of semi-rough on each hole. Only a few inches but it can sit down and it is definitely a good half shot penalty. The real deep stuff is a fair distance off line on each hole and pretty fair

We have 3 nine hole courses, two of which aren't too bad with rough. Each course has a pretty well defined 1st, 2nd and even 3rd cut which goes back around 5-7 yards off the fairway. Beyond that on the new 9 though and some of it is head height.
Yesterday playing partner put his tee shot about 6" off the long short stuff (just in to the rough) and took a provisional as he knew there was no way he was finding it. He was right.

I played the Macdonald Cardrona course on Saturday and I have to say the round would have been great had it not been for the rough! Brutal has been mentioned in a few replies already and I'll definitely say the same for here. There was fariway, then knee high rough. No first cut, semi rough etc just knee high long grasses etc which meant finding a ball was impossible!

Ours can up to waist high.
Admittedly, it's a decent distance offline and it's a poor shot to find it but, guess what?
We're handicap golfers and we're all capable of bitting a bad enough shot to get there.
Anyone who says they're too straight to find it is either using a 9 iron all the time or they're not trying hard enough...

Knee high in most parts and waist high in others on the PGA, a missed fairway or a wayward iron and its a drop shot at the moment. If the driver is off its soul destroying.

Our's is the thickest its been for yrs. We've dropped food parcels to some members who are lost, and we've started issuing machete's to members.

Rumour has it there's a pride of lions out by the 9th...

As Homer said, ours is pretty fair. A decent 1st cut and then some real jungle which is waste high if not deeper in places but you've hit a bad or stupid shot to go in it. The greens are even receptive even though the fairways are baked hard so can't really complain.

Ours is fine this year, but previously has been up to waist high and thick. This hot weather has made is fairly sparse, but the heather is nice and thick. Three wood is the choice of club on most holes, as fairways are running at about ten on the stimp !!
