Ours has gone from manageable to dire in the space of a fortnight, it's literally got that bad that anything misses a fairway by more than two foot runs the risk of being lost.

We had a major on Sunday and everytime you missed the first cut you had to reload through caution and to save the walk of shame back.

This was a major contributor to slow play with most rounds being 5hrs plus, ours being between 5:30 and 5:45 due to being at the back of the group.

I low we have had wet humid weather which speeds up growth but why do clubs do it? As it was I level hc on after 16" but the last two holes took me from in the running to net 78.... Why make the rough so deep at club level?

So,... How's yours.

Not so sure its optional for all clubs. Weve had a lot of rain the last week or so which has limited how much time the greenstaff have been able to get the machinery on the course. Add in perfect growing conditions and you have greenstaff fighting almost a losing battle in trying to keep the rough as low as most of us would desire.

Ours is pretty heavy in places, especially off the beaten track and we are lacking a first cut between the fairway and the rough, but they are clearly doing their best to manage the growth as much as they can so have to be patient with it imo.

That said, some of the collars round the greens are pretty brutal and really test the short game!

Lets just say it's best not to go in it. The first cut is as it should be, short enough to find your ball, long enough to be half a shot penalty. I don't recommend straying outside the first cut though.

Ours is bad, miss the fairway and you have to make sure you get a good line on where it went is as you can't see it till your pretty much stood on the ball, I know you shouldn't get a good lie in the rough but when you miss the fairway by a couple of yards and your having to hack out with a wedge all the time it gets annoying.

Also ours is so inconsistent, you will have a strip where it's only about 2" deep then a strip where it's a good 2" longer.

Hopefully they will have got out and cut it short today as it's forecast to be wet most of the week and it will be brutal in a few more days.

If you are at a large affluent course with plenty of green keeping staff then it is possible that they can keep on top of the rough. If however, you only have a small number of staff then surely the fairways and greens take precedence over the rough. I know which parts of the course I would like to be kept in the best condition.

very thick but expected after the rain and heat over the last week - will be cut soon

Haven't played for a few weeks, turned up again this week and the rough is absolutely brutal

Looks fairly wispy but is thick at the bottom, anything that goes in it is a lottery if you can find it. Not an easy course at the best of times but I can only imagine how brutal its been the last few comps (I believe e comp at the weekend had around 50 NRs and CSS up by 3)

The rough at The Open could be interesting. If it is left "Au Natural" then I can see a few of the pro's whining about it being too long. Especially if the wind gets up that week. I'm no links expert but it seems to me that some of the worlds best players are not too good on the links either, and do not give the course the respect it deserves.

I came across a herd of rhino's in ours, and they could only just be seen in the thick clover.

TBH the biggest problem is the clover, as even when you are stood directly over your ball very often you cannot see it.

I had a ball land in our first cut, there were patches of clover everywhere, lost ball. Virtually had to run after the thing if it was wayward to have half a chance of finding it. So you can imagine how much running I was doing.

Lol

Absolutely spot on. There are certain times/conditions where the course just gets away from G/Ks.

I've known times where the difference in a week is from balls actually ending up in a good position to attack pins, even if in 2nd cut (1.5") to being lost because it takes more than 5 mins to find them! A week later when the mower is finally able to achieve something, the situation is back to 'normal' again!

At the start of the season the G/K was only cutting the rough every 2 weeks, but following complaints it was then cut every week and it became 'manageable'. However, over the last week it has shot up again and as others have stated almost impossible to find a ball when it goes in it. Makes you wonder if the G/K's are running a comp to see who can grow the longest rough.

And it's just going to get worse Iain:eek:

Ours isn't too bad. It was horrendous last year. They've kept it down early on so hopefully can keep on top of it. I know we should be on the fairway but we're club golfers not pros! Mines pretty tree lined too so you get a double whammy of being blocked out plus crazy rough. Hopefully they took on board last years complaints and are keeping it down.

Long enough to penalise you but you need to go quiet off track to lose it. It's nice and lush and grabs the club head in the second cut and the ball tends to sit down in it but can still be found without much trouble. That was on Saturday anyway.
