Hi all - any ideas as to the best way to go about this? A company restructure means I'm looking for a different career and would be interesting in caddying as Im not going to make a it as a pro myself....Involved with sport in a coaching capacity at a high level and in sport development as a business mentor/ coach consultant at present.

Find a local club to yourself who use caddies.. contact the club pro or caddie master and explain that your interested in becoming a caddie.. see how it goes from there. As for doing it as a profession, its normally a case of being in the right place at the right time.. for instance, Martin Kaymer's caddie was asked if he wanted to help out at loch lomond by a friend whilst playing his local course.. now look where he is

It's not all glamour and glitz though!

I was chatting to a tour caddy on Friday, he said that many of the Pro's are complete a***o*es. Most are self centered, arrogant and treat their caddies pretty poorly. They generally are precocious yongsters from well off families and have never done proper work in their lives and, as a result, don't know how to treat people properly.

Having said that they pay (he said) about £700 per week, plus 7.5% for making the cut and 10% of winnings. You pay for your own travel in Europe, but get assistance from the Pro beyond Europe. Mostly they travel seperately as the players can afford to pay more for their flights and the caddy goes as cheap as he can find. Almost always when the player plays badly the caddy gets the sack!

When I asked who the worst player for abusing his caddy was, you would be quite suprised who the answer was! I won't tell as I don't think it would be fair.

Good Luck

Chris

U must tell us now!!!

Why not get in touch with these guys and see what they recommend

A lot of clubs no longer use caddies so it might be difficult to find a club near you that has them on a regular basis. If there is one. go along and chat to the caddy master and introduce yourself and see what he says. Not really the right time of year, but why not talk to a few local pros and see if any of them want a regular caddy for next season

if you want an interesting account of somebody sharing a similar dream read "four iron in the soul" written by Lawrence Donegan (penguin?)
very good read for any body with a golfing interest. ;)

Essexrob come and caddie for me next Sun, I start around 7.30am so you would have to be in leeds for 6.10ish you can get my gear ready whilst I have a couple of snifters in the locker room. I'll meet you on the 1st tee and I will give you 10% of any winnings including the 2 club. I got £6.70 for a 2 last week 'cos 3 of us had one oh and I won the fiddle which gave me £13.00. As it's in Europe you will have to pay your own travel but hey it's a start. Shall I expect you? :D

That is not exactly true and will vary from player to player. Also the percentage of winnings they get will change from position and player.

I realise that, it was only meant as a guide

I can't get to you this week. Maybe when your on the tour (and I've got some experience...) we could look at a deal???

It's an interesting book right enough. Shame Donegan comes across as such a clueless *** of a man and caddy. He clearly just did it as a reason to write a book. Can you tell I don't like him?
