Having played a singles tie last night my playing partner shared some information with me that I thought would be good to pass on, especially to the high handicapper like me.

I always knew I could get cut by stableford but thought I needed 38 points before a cut. According to this guy that is not correct. He gave me the following information, please correct me if anyone knows any better or let me know if this is correct.

My course is a par 69

If CSS is 68 34-37 points gets buffer and 38 and above gets a cut

If CSS is 69 33-36 points gets buffer and 37 and above gets a cut

If CSS is 70 32-35 points gets buffer and 36 and above gets a cut

If CSS is 71 31-34 points gets buffer and 35 and above gets a cut

If CSS is 72 30-33 points gets buffer and 34 and above gets a cut

Cat 1 get cut by .1
Cat 2 get cut by .2
Cat 3 get cut by .3

This information has really changed my though process for playing now. Instead of thinking I need 38 + for a cut I now know for example if the CSS is 71(which it was 3 out of last 4 medals) I only need 31 points for the buffer.

Hope this information helps someone else (and its correct  )

You forgot cat 4 who get a 4 shot buffer

Surely people would know their buffer zone on any given comp day , thats the reason we play comps , to get a cut or if playing badly then to scramble round in the buffer zone. I guess a lot of players dont even know what a buffer zone is :D

Im new to golf and only in my 3rd year with my club so thats my excuse for my ignorance.

As far as knowing the buffer zone thats not decided until most of the field complete the course (ithink) its all to do with % of field and their scores.

The buffer can change each and every round.

You didn't mention in your OP that the buffer zone also equates to your catogory...

Cat 1 = 1 shot buffer

Cat 2 = 2 shot buffer

etc..

Cheers for that. Im of 18 so these were the numbers given to me to equate to my targets etc. He did say that to me also.

Cat 1 is up to and including 5
Cat 2 6-12
Cat 3 13-18
Cat 4 19-?

Is that right?

I never think about the BZ until all shots are gone then it becomes a new challenge.
Farneyman, If I was you I wouldnt be thinking 31 points at all matey, keep the foot down.

Almost perfect....
Cat 3 13-20
Cat 4 21-28

Am jst trying to stop the rot. Went from 16 to 18.3 in 2 years. If this helps steady the ship then am willing to try for a couple of buffers then go for a cut...... Have had 2 cuts and 2 buffers is about minimum 30 medals....thats just not good enough.

Thanks for clearing that up Bobmac

Tell me about it, I am struggling this past couple of years myself, have gone from 6.0 to 9.6 (gulp, 10!) I blame having 3 kids in quick succession! :D
I am usually pretty straight with my driver and 5 wood but for this weeks game (monthly medal) I am going to go round with no woods as I am fed up wasting around 3-4 shots a round hacking out of the bushes! Bit of an experiment and probably not the best day to do it as the course plays its full 6500 yards off the back sticks. That said, I can usually get 220-230 with my 3 iron so it will only hurt on the par 5's and will wind my neck in on some of the tougher holes. which might be a good thing!

The buffer can change each and every round.

Just work from the SSS , if you know youre going to hit that then you wont be far away. You can adjust in your head if you think the conditions are easy that day then go for SSS -1. It's pretty simple really if all your looking for is to scramble into the buffer. Plenty of extra shots if youre not cat 1

Serously though it looks easier to get a cut in Stableford then!

The point is, medals are scored for handicap purposes as if they were stableford.

If you score 95 in a medal with a 10 on a par 4 that you get 1 shot on, your medal score will still be 95 but your adjusted score for your h/cap would be 92.

Clear as mud :D :D
