Hi recently joined a club after years out of the game and played several rounds before putting in 3 cards to get a handicap .
We played off white tees for the 3 cards and was disappointed at my scores and my handicap came back at 32 .
I then played a couple of times before entering a medal competition at the club , primarily to lower my handicap if possible.
I was delighted that I shot 10 under my handicap but on finding out my handicap had been cut 15 shots I was less than delighted , I expected and indeed wanted a cut but not 15 shots after one good round .
Can anyone tell me if this is correct as everything i have read has stated that a 15 shot cut after one good round is not possible.

I’ve never heard of such a huge reduction. Not even close. I would suggest your handicap secretary should be asked to rationalise that, as I’m not sure anyone here can.

Worth reading this

After 3 rounds your HI is taken from the lowest score differential then minus 1

And that’s the same when it’s 4 rounds and 5

As you can see from the table below

So your HI after 4 rounds will the score differential minus 1.0

What were the Differentials of your 4 rounds?

As shown in the chart posted by Arthur Wedge, if you have only submitted 4 rounds your index will be the score differential of your best round minus 1, your handicap is liable to fluctuate more than normal until you have 20 scores recorded. So in answer to your question, yes it will be correct.

Not sure what software you use at your club but if you register on the MyEG app you will be able to look at the details outlined above.

An exceptional score adjustment would almost certainly have been automatically applied which would take 2 shots off each of your score differentials. You would also see if any manual adjustments have been made over and above the 2 shot exceptional score adjustment for your 4th round. If this had been done I would have expected your handicap committee to have contacted you.

Incidentally, we played - must have been a very good round.

I've only put in 4 cards with the 4th being the best and the only one that counts according to the diffential chart .
I've used the formula for working out the differential and it come to 20.4 on my 4th card so it's -1 making it 19.4 . Look like they took 2 shot exceptional round as well making it 17.4 .
I'm happy now with the system and how it is formulated I just look forward to playing off 17.

You do not have to use any formula just look on the appropriate website e.g. England Golf
Your score may have also been adjusted for a PCC (Playing Conditions Calculation) if a lot of players played a lot better than their handicap there may well be one.

A pal's early experience was similar to yours...

His third recorded round on EG cut him by 15.3 shots. He demonstrated how much he could improve and it certainly spurred him on. Four years later and his handicap now hovers around 5.
Hopefully you'll do likewise. I certainly didn't.
