Just had my place confirmed for their Silver Trophy next month - excited is an understatement!!!!

The place looks amazing, lined with £10m+ houses everywhere - I'm expecting something very special....

Who has played it? What were your thoughts?

One out of place country bumpkin will be inbound!!! :D

Enjoy Darren, it makes Wentworth look like a council estate.

You'll be playing the Red and Blue loops, the Green is a bit shorter although still contains some lovely holes. It's a fantastic place for a days' golf, proper upmarket heathland golf. You even have to blag your way past the security guards just to get into the place!

Top tip.....go easy on the lunch or you won't be able to swing a club in the afternoon

My favourite thing about the place.....the practice nets are angled so your ball rolls back to you after every shot :D

Have a great day!!

On of my favourite courses that I am lucky enough to play at least once a year. Must admit I am not so keen on the green nine, although it does have a couple of lovely par 3's. The Red and Blue are superb, and you can open you shoulders on most of the holes. If the greens are quick beware !! The 9th and 18th are treacherous so make sure you are below the hole.

It is easy to get lost once you get past Checkpoint Charlie. The estate is huge, and there are a few nice houses on it  Agree with Gordon watch out for the lunch !!

If you like classic heathland courses, Harry Colt at his best, you will love St Georges Hill. Do you need a caddie ?;)

It looks stunning! If its a patch on Hankley then happy days....that goes for the lunch too!!! :)

D4S - walked The Worcrstershire today, there will be some low scoring I bet. Very scoreable!

Darren, it is simply stunning. Harry Colt Classic......Play it twice a year with Snelly and the Aircraft Golf Society. Prepare to be blown away.....here's the clubhouse....

nice- do a few of these up here especially the old traditional ones as some of the elite play, means you get nadda unless your special but great to play in that company- it's a different game.

Is it hard to get in? only asking as you said your now confirmed and over excited

I've been balloted out twice before playing off 4 & 3 so happy to get in this year. The mid am (this is over 25s) is the only stuff I can get in as the open field ballots for biggies are usually scratch.

Rick - that is stunning!!!! :)

Fantastic course in an amazing setting with a real sense of occasion. Lunch is legendary and the service and facilities are just about second to none.

I play here twice a year and have done so for the past 12 years. It's an absolute cracker, especially in good weather.

Played with Rick in March at SGH. Big event with over 85 players. I can't remember who cleaned up all the prizes. Lucky chap as I hear it was all cases of fantastic Fortnum and Mason vino!

Anyway I hope you get sunny skies and play well. If you do, you are in for a real treat and this will go straight into your list of best played courses, probably quite near the top too. I love it there and I am sure you will.

Cheers,

Snelly.

Wouldn't call it 'classic' Harry Colt myself - if anything shows more imagination than usual! But certainly magnificent use of the property.

If possible, try to get a practice round - or at least walk around it - as there are quite a few holes where there are blind/semi-blind shots or where some experience of the course is a distinct advantage.

The short hole 12th? is a classic short short hole, I think I have had more 5's than 3's there and it is only about 125 yards.

Debating a bit of symantics, so marginal value. It just doesn't shreak 'Colt!' in the same way that the likes of Thorndon Park, Swinley and Camberley Heath do to me.

11 - 117 off the back (110 off the Yellows). Perhaps. and a great short hole - and I'm 1 under for my 3 rounds!. But always seems a bit of a 'connector' hole to me which is what I mean by great use of the property. That in itself is often a Colt stamp (that I probably don't consider) though. 8 is arguably more his 'typical' Par 3 style. Both great Par 3s (if pushed, I prefer 8) imo.

To me, it's the teasy short Par 4s, bunkers (with eyebrows) staring at you on the tee and sweeping tree-lined holes that typify Colt's design rather than individual Par 3s. The Par 3s at SGH don't have the balance, to me, of some of his though that may be from being lengthened over the years. I actually think the Par 3s on Wentworth East work best off Yellows. Swinley has the best set imo and that may be because they are still pretty much as originally laid out!

As stated, all a bit personal so a big FWIW!

Must admit I am not a great fan of the 11th. Our short 12th is much better !!! Agree that Swinley has the best par 3's. To me it is a typical Colt course. He did have some of the best land to build his courses on, but they have stood the test of time.

Just wish they would put the thatch roof back on the clubhouse !!

To be very contentious - can a golf club that hardly anyone plays be deemed a great golf club. If I can't play there it doesn't matter to me whether or not it exists - so what does 'great' then mean to me for that golf club. Does the tallest tree in the world only exist once man has measured it?

There's a world of difference between 'great golf club' and 'great golf course'. The magic is to find one where you think both apply! And the first description is much more down to personal preference!
