St Georges Day

Well we don't have our own Parliament so why should we?

Whenever "England" is celebrated the National Front get the credit for it so it becomes a pointless excercise.

God knows mate!

Why do us English have to make do with God save Liz?

Land of Hope and Glory should be the one, makes the hair on the back of my kneck stand up.
Many people say Jerusalem should be the English anthem, suppose because it mentions England in it.

Land of Hope and Glory for me.
Also a national holiday on 23rd April.

I wholeheartedly agree.

If you declare yourself as being English its seen as a racist statement...

Wether I like it or not I'm apparently British...

Something not right when you can't celebrate your own heritage in your own country...

The english rugby lot purloined Swing Low Sweet Chariot for a time although that seems to have gone off the boil a bit.

Jerusalem is an absolutely fantastic anthem. Can't understand why it's not been adopted as the english anthem across the board (or should that be pitch!). It's the kind of tune that really stirs the blood and you'd never get tired of singing or listening to it whereas, Land of Hope and Glory doesn't quite do it for me.

It certainly shouldn't be God Save the Queen. That is still british ... just.

You might get one, and a new flag when us Scots depart in 2013. Another when the Welsh go their own way too. Is there any English born people left over the border, I was in London last week and its now getting ridiculous. I was the only white face in the hotel restaurant for breakfast. Not being racist but I fear for the UK.

People who are being racist usually use "Not being racist but..." as their get out of jail free card so they can actually make racist comments (as above) without feeling bad about it.

Plenty of english born people still here but funnily enough, London is a global, multi-cultural city with plenty of opportunity. You'll find the same blend of different cultures in most of Europe's biggest cities.

Why do you "fear for the UK"?

It may be of interest that there is no such thing as an 'national anthem.
GSTQ is just a tune that became popular in the music halls when General Wade was slaughtering the Scots. {hence dodgy 4th verse}

As for England.
Jeruselam...the words are all wrong.
Swing Low......... a negro spiritual from the country that promoted slavery, maybe not.
I Vow To Thee My Country.......... religeous hymn so a few words will need changing. My favourite.

BTW...

My suggestion for an English national anthem would be something from Queen who were absolutely brilliant when it came to penning anthem type songs...

So how about 'We are the Champions' ;)...

I don't know about Alan...

But I fear for my country when we can't deport someone not worthy of our welcome... Yet we'll quite happily pack off another for tenuous reasons without a fair hearing...

Firstly, the European Court of Human Rights ruling isn't legally binding, we could quite easily pack off whomever we choose.

Secondly are you suggesting that a flawed extradition treaty with another country is a reason to fear the "collapse of the UK"?

The level of wealth and freedom we have in this country is only matched in a relatively small number of countries across the world, like all countries we have our flaws but I can't think of many other places that have what we have in the UK.

Firstly, why the flip don't we just pack him off then? Believe 'we' might attract a 'small' fine but so what...

Secondly, any country worth its salt should be self determining when it comes to its people and not just jump to attention at the behest of another... Bit of spinal fortitude is what seperates the great from the also rans...
