I play once a week with a friend and would class myself as "intermediate". My racquet is a bit old and beaten up so decided I'd get a new one.

Went to a local sports shop to have a look yesterday and they look and feel much better than mine (sports direct Wilson £20 job!) but a bit priceier than I was expecting, around £65-100. Different shape head and much lighter than my current one (mine is around 190grams from a quick google, whereas these were more 120-130 I think).

Any advice on what brands to look out for/avoid or anything I should specifically ask about when I go back tomorrow?

Yonex? I remember when I was doing a driver test review the Yonex fitter said they were the main market leader where graphite was concerned and their main background was rackets.

Can't help with what modern racquet to buy as I am still playing weekly with 23 year year old Prince Extender Oversize.

The squash coach at our club has a collection of "classic" racquets and this is one that he hasn't got, so he has first dibs on mine whenever I give up squash or buy a new one.

Mind you, open to offers ........

I play squash about 4 times a week and am half decent.

A bit like golf equipment, a good strategy is to buy something that was the best thing since sliced bread a couple of years ago.

The rackets below are all excellent - 3of the best in fact - used by lots of people from intermediate club players right through county standard and up to the top pros. One of these would be a really good buy depending on the style of frame you want. I personally use the Prince Airstick 130. This is great for power and touch.

I would steer away from Wilson. All their R&D goes into tennis.

Man up and play with a proper racket.....

It's not squash if you use a tennis racket sized head ;)

Thanks for the advice, went back this lunch and went with prince.

This one http://www.isportstore.com/Squash/P...-Pro-Airstick-Lite-550-Squash-Racket-(1).aspx but from local place.

Liked the look so will see how I get on Monday with it.

I have used this and found it to be okay but not nearly as nice as the Airstick 130. A bit late now but I still have it in a cupboard somewhere and you could have had it for £30 - barely used!

Sorry - should have thought of this sooner.

Nice - am playing in a wooden rackets tournament on the 19th!

Blimey I'd have thought they were all broken by now. I used to love the ultra light Donnay rackets back in the early eighties, but they were definitely a consumable item in my hands. The huge headed rackets we all use nowadays have definitely made the game easier - bit like modern drivers.

I use to play a bit and a member of a good squash club with a high standard (national league) - now play more tennis and racket ball although Im playing in a biannual squash doubles comp tonight

I would reccomend prince or dunlop rackets - not the cheapy ones from Sports Direct or similar, from a good sports retailer

I also had a number wooden dunlop maxply squash rackets many years ago

No worries, I do like buying new though and the place I got it from gave me a discount anyway and I'm sure it'll be a big improvement on what I've currently got.
