I admit I was a massive cynic- thought i'd hate the square drivers but after trialing the Callaway for a couple of weeks I have been converted! I haven't lost any distance as expected and strikes that would have left the golf course with my old driver have ended up on the fairway!

Is any one else feeling the same?

I'm intrigued by the hype surrounding square drivers. It surely can't transform a 28 handicapper's drives into arrow straight beauties every time can it ?? If they weren't so expensive i might have given them a try by now !

Still cynical. Didn't see many at the Masters. If the face isn't square at impact then it doesn't matter what shape the head is, does it? Seems like just another golf invention to make Nike and Callaway lots of cash.

Fully agree with ‘birdieman’. Doesn’t matter what shape the club is if you can’t put the club squarely on the ball in the first place then it ain’t gonna fly straight whatever shape it is, or indeed however much it costs.

Incidentally, saw somebody on the driving range the other day trialling one of the new square Nike Drivers, it makes the most horrific noise on impact. Think I’ll stick with the trusty G5.

The theory behind them is that they help to square the face at impact due to the positioning of the weight in the club.

Agree with the noise the Nike makes though- horrible!

I'm not a high handicapper and was reluctant to spend the money but it really did make a difference- more so than any other driver I have bought previously.

Psychological! New gadgets, toys etc we buy we have to justify to ourselves so we tell ourselves how great the new toy (in this case a driver) is.
Wait until next season when the manufacturers have yet another new driver on sale, hexagonal, octagonal whatever - I bet you wont be so enamoured with your 2007 square driver then.
For us club players form comes and goes, sometimes I nail a driver for weeks then other times I start pulling them.
Of course I may be completely wrong but I'm sticking to my 905R. Good driving is all in the correct shaft for our swingspeeds anyway, not the head shape or size.
If I was looking for a driver I would buy a Ping G2 with the grafalloy shaft(better than the G5 or Rapture) or a Nike Ignite with a shaft upgrade, can get both for pennies now and are as long and easy to hit as anything else out there.

If it’s psychological then why use a 905R? Why not use an old Callaway Big Bertha head and stick a decent shaft in it? Of course head size and shape can influence driving- for one the new larger heads are so much more forgiving. There is no doubt that a good shaft can have a massive influence but you cant dismiss head size and shape as purely psychological.

Got a good price for the 905r with the right shaft, nice traditional shape too. Not against progress per se, just unconvinced that square drivers are worth the cash. Golf companies have to re-invent the wheel all the time to make money, no other reason. They do that by hard selling their 'make you a better player' products when all we really need is good coaching and some time to practice. Saying that let us know if your handicap tumbles this season and you may convince me to buy a squarey after all!
