SPOTY 2025

Fair points but the idea of the licence fee was that the BBC could broadcast niche viewing without a worry about audiences.

With the Olympics I love that it is free to sit but I would sell the rights with an obligation to promote and broadcast some of the lesser known events year round that are not shown elsewhere. You want the bug events you have to support the little ones
Depends on what events you mean

As example one of the highest played team sport is hockey

And no one broadcasts it

Exactly sports just like that which are part of the Olympics give them the chance to grow a wider audience by putting them on terrestrial TV. Something like the old grandstand with different sports every week

I wouldn't get too hung up on merit or any kind of objectivity (which is different for each of us anyway). Much like Strictly, it's a public vote and will be forgotten by most sports fans within a couple of days.
It will have the greatest positive impact on Kildunne, so I hope she wins it. But that's just my subjective opinion.

I cannot remember the last time I watched it, and don’t miss it.
I miss it - as it was. It was one of the highlights of the year for us as a 70s family. I’ll still watch but it’s no longer a ‘must watch’.

And I don’t blame the BBC for how it’s gone…with the funding at its disposal it’d be ludicrous, and in many respects impossible, to try and compete for the broadcasting rights of much that used to be broadcast,,,though I think we look at what was done back then through rose tinted glasses.

Will be honest but I’m a little disappointed that Lottie Woad isn’t shortlisted for Young SPOTY…as the criteria is…

’recognised as a sporting superstar of the future and for their outstanding achievement in the world of sport this year’

But perhaps not too surprised…with golf, never mind women’s golf, never featuring much as it doesn’t really register in the public consciousness. I’m not sure how Luke Littler (shortlisted) fits with the ‘superstar of the future’ bit given he already is one…and is shortlisted for SPOTY 🤷‍♂️😘

Anyway..I doubt that she’ll be that bothered though it would have been nice for women’s golf to have been so recognised, with Lottie and Charley both in World Top 10 at one point…first time ever two British Women in golf’s world women’s top ten.
You missed the criteria that mentions 18 or under on 1 January 2025 😉

Isn’t she too old ?

Youngest ever winner of SPOTY was Ian Black, Scottish Swimmer, in 1958. Golfer Dai Rees won the year before.

Ian Black turned 17 in June 1958. At the European Championships in September he won 3 of GB's 5 gold medals.
400m and 1500m freestyle along with 200m butterfly.

I'm still baffled on the Chloe Kelly hype. She didn't start a lot of the games, and scored a couple of penalties. The fact that she's become the poster girl of that team just suggests to me that most people didn't actually watch it, they just saw on the news who scored and latched onto that.

I would think the original hype comes from the previous euro final, when she scored the winner and then took her shirt off and waving it above her head. She then got a couple of penalties as a ‘super sub’ and the hype subsequently rose
