AW the dogs are normally only there to retrieve to fallen game. So not part of the hunt as such.
pheasants sit so tight that you really need the working dog to flush them,you can pretty much walk over a pheasant and they won't move.a few times i had to practically chase them before they flew,some didn't.
my father inlaw has a lab that does brilliantly,she points and waits for you.this is great whilst on a rough shoot because the last thing you want is your dog working way ahead and flushing birds that are too far away to shoot.she waits for you then when you get close enough and tell her to fish them out she puts the bird up.it's great!!
