Sponsorship

Nope, totally in agreement with you andy, cobra putters are absolutely shocking, wouldn't use one if you paid me.

There is just no feel to them whatsoever, they are worse than some of the cheapie wilson putters I have played with.

its the first time in a while i haven't had a full bag with the same manufacturer and i think andy and GCD have a valid point

I have Wilson staff rescue, woods and irons but that is solely down to what works for me, the putters are awful. Also use Wilson staff balls (px3 soft)

Only brand I have loyalty to is adidas, I was once sponsored by them and know their kit works for me believe in their research and design.

That ball test would be very interesting - everyone I know is picky about what they hit - even I have my likes and dislikes, which are probably based on no more than superstition!

That was done by Todays Golfer last month.

They blindfolded three people who all used Pro V1 and let them putt with different balls and chose what fealt best too them.

Two of them chose Srixon Soft Feel ball and one chose Pro V1. Amazing what can happen!!!! A ball at less than half the price of the Pro V and they say they prefer it when blindfolded and cant see Titleist written on it!!!

If anything I am moving away from the companied that sponsor loads of tour players. Starting the realise that quality kit that is more than good enough for players of my standard can be bought for half the price. When you look at the quality of components used by companied like MD, Benross and Orka then look at the prices they charge you can see straight away how much is being paid to line the pockets of the tour pros.

I don't see the point of buying something just because it's endorsed by one of the top pros, firstly because the shots can make are on a different planet to us hackers and secondly because their gear is individually tailored & customed to the nth degree so bears only a cosmetic resemblance to the stuff in the shops.
I always try before I buy and if it works and it's a sensible price I'll have it. ( Broke this rule once, bought a driver 'cos TD mag said it was the bees knees and found I couldn't hit it for toffee)

it is probably a waste of time as the top pro's might not use the gear they are supposed to.

It happens in other sports, Footballers getting other boots made to look like there sponsors boots ect.

Tiger is said to use other clubs that are made to look like nike irons, is it true probably.

For every golfer who does not buy cause of sponsorship i would think 100 do, If it did not make manufacturers money they would not sponsor.

 TRAITOR

I think we are missing the point. I buy clubs and equipment to suit me and my game, I wouldn't ever buy a make because a certain player uses a certain make. One reason is that the pro's don't even use the same shafts/lofts as off the shelf stuff. I've just got my G5 driver (G5 is alive!) and couldn't name anyone other than Cabrera that uses Ping. he certainly isn't using a NVS 65!!!!

What I would say is that the brands "need" the players to prove their equipment is worthy. Would Callaway/Taylor Made/Ping/Cobra/Titleist sell so many clubs without prominent players being seen with logos/hats/head-covers?

So, I don't follow a pro, but I am swayed more by clubs I know of. Then again, a good review in a Mag is much better for getting to the players who know their stuff.
