Spieth's Monitoring warning

Quote from the pga website

"Sometimes referees have to use a bit of common sense," said McIlroy, who sympathized with Spieth.

McIlroy - What a tube, 2 shot penalty for each offence or chuck them out.

I've been a member at one course for 34 years and back in the day it took just over 3 hours to play a medal round, NOW it can take 4 :sbox:

"Having the balls" would be a points deduction. Fining multimillionaires £2000 is not going to solve anything.

I agree that the actual fine will mean nothing to him from a financial perspective, but I'd argue it's the symbolism rather than the actual penalty in this case that is the issue.

They have shown they are not afraid to pull up the worlds number 1 and one of the most famous current tour golfers on the planet up on this. It is not realistic to expect them to start penalising them shots straight away. Use this approach, make them know they will go after anyone and see if that makes a difference. They if not you can ramp up the penalties.

Why have a namby-pamby attitude when you can have a rule, no messing, bish bash bosh

Must admit I remember the days when it only took 3 hours, sadly now that's a thing of the past.

Yep ... Too many out there patting each others back and having a good time, what happened to trying to hammer someone.

:temper: Agreed.... TBH I have no idea how or when it all went wrong but the game needs to be speeded up & it's not just the Pro game that's needs to take action

So the European Tour is starting at the top.

Jordan Spieth attracted a warning for 'slow' play on his putt. Not the most blatant slow shot, they were not out of position, but interesting to see if more players fall foul.

This came out just before the event

Apparently they were told on the fourth hole that they were being monitored because they were out of position. Normally, monitoring stops when the group gets back into position. Speith gets a bad time on the 8th hole - seems they were not back into position yet.

Medals at my place, we go out in 3s with 9 minute gaps. I usually play early and always get round in 3 and a half hours or less.
Most courses have been lengthened and/or toughened up (perhaps to keep SSS the same), this adds to the time taken.

Back on topic - give caddies a responsibility to time their players. If they don't play within a certain time, 1 stroke penalty.

The group Behind were just teeing off I believe, seems a bit harsh and trying to make an example, we want the best players playing the European tour and this sort of thing might deter them.
Im all for speeding up play but I don't believe they were a slow group, it's not like they are hunting in trees every other shot 😀

“It was weird,” McIlroy said. “I was surprised Jordan got a bad time on a putt when the guys behind weren’t even approaching their balls back on the fairway. Sometimes we need to apply some common sense, especially when we are not out of position. It’s not like Jordan is a slow player".

Doesn't this go against the "keep up with the group in front, not just ahead of the group behind" thingie?????

Just what I was going to post

Both are being quoted as talking about the group behind and not mentioning the group ahead, could just be selective reporting of course but still strange they should even mention the following group just as if they were AM's playing a medal game
JS even says he looked behind to check it was clear before deciding to knowingly take too long over his putt

I have only been playing for 5 years and for the first 4 years I used to watch plenty of golf on the tv, but every year it has gotten slower and slower, these guys twitch and move away and then look at the putt from 7 different angles, I just dont enjoy watching anymore. I tried to watch last night to see how Rory and Jordan would do and the amount of time that Jordan takes is a joke. Rory and Fowler were not too bad in my opinion, but Jordan was shocking. Tried to watch it on fast forward and eventually just gave up watching.

I know he is an awesome putter, but 2 minutes over a putt? Come on! His full shot pre-shot routine includes 3 or 4 twitches/looks at the hole. Ridiculous now

I commented on this point on Twitter as JS beleived he could take as much extra time as he wanted just because the group behind were not in sight or waiting for them, what was also disappointing also was that the commentators were siding with him, so what chance do we have!!

If that's the case the last group out could take as long as they want then on that basis!

Not a single comment as to where they were in relation to the group in front.

Not a single comment as to where they were in relation to the group in front.

That's often irrelevant.

The only relevance is to the time sheet that each player is given at the beginning of the round. The time for each hole, with an accumulated time, is shown and that is the only thing each group needs to adhere to. If a group is behind time due to a group in front, the group in front will be responsible.

I do think it's important to keep up with the group in front, or else the whole thing can slow down IMO

Not at all in professional tournaments.

Groups must keep up with the speed of play as dictated by the official time sheet, if they do that it is irrelevant if there is a three hole gap because the groups in front are playing quicker.
