Hi Folks,
Am hopefully going up to play Southerness in July with my Pal, just wondering has anyone played it and what they thought of it?
cheers, Andy :)

Very nice course, just pray the wind doesnt blow, cos when it blows down there it blows alright!!!!

Played it a month ago. Enjoyed it but maybe expected a bit more from the hype it gets.
Although its linksy there is a lot of lush fairway and there aren't any dunes, its very exposed to the Solway so is very testy if the wind is up.
Clubhouse is functional and staff were friendly.
All in all well worth a visit but not as memorable as I thought it would be for some reason, not exactly sure why. :D

Played it a year ago. It is a great course if you hit it straight. If you end up in the rough stuff though then unless you have a spoon abondon all hope of getting it out again. one downside was that we harried aroubd the course to play quickly by the friendly staff. PS It wasn't windy but if it is then all the best

I have played the course quite a few times over the years,i spend quite a bit of time at the caravan site opp

Its a great track esp in summer and if the wind blows expect a lost ball or three i sure you will enjoy

Follow the road down and when you nearly hit the sea the club is there its back and beyond

BM,
Played it years ago pre-magazine days again based on the hype, and I think I'd agree with you - perfectly pleasant but not quite as good as I'd been expecting, except perhaps for that hole with the green kind of surrounded by the sea. Much prefer Silloth the other side of the Firth.
However, dodger, having played Murcar just recently that certainly lived up to expectations for me so not quite sure why you didn't rate it? Like Royal Aberdeen, the front nine certainly eclipses the back, but still a great links experience overall for me, :o

(faces at my son's request by the way - departure from style for me!)

Jezz I just thought that it wasn't that great a track, short and quirky....very quirky. The front 9 was indeed nicer than the back but even then no holes that really jumped up at me as great holes and I think I could have played all the way round without hitting driver and that to me is not what a great golf track should be like and is why I feel it is hugely overated and very very quirky...as I said in my review I have played many courses that are much better but don't receive the same aclaim among them my own underated track....come and play at and I am sure we will agree...

dodger,
Each to his own, I guess, which is the great thing about our game - one man's classic is another man's goat track or something like that!
The day I played Murcar I couldn't get up with two drivers on some holes coming home, such was the strength of the wind. Conversely I did hit a front nine par 5 with driver, wedge and a couple of 430-yarders with 3-iron, 9-iron. But I always love links golf when it's like that - a real test.
Must get up and sample your track next time I'm in the area

I played at Murcar with Dodger and thought the course was good but a bit over-hyped...
Required some discipline off the tee on the front 9 which we aren't used to where we play...no doubting we are tough critics of other links courses as we compare everyone to our own track
Murcar is twice the price of Goswick but certainly not twice the course.
Playing Western Gailes on friday and Silloth in july so it'll be compared to them also.

Jezz you really must get up to Goswick for a game.

Totally agree with Jezz, I also played it a few years ago I think perfectly pleasant but not quite as good as I'd been expecting. Also as Jezz states I much prefer Silloth on Sollway the other side of the Firth. Awesome.

Have wanted to play Murcar for a while but Dodgers review has put me off. I played Royal Aberdeen many times as a student and thought it a terrific track, I imagined Murcar would be similar but clearly it's not as good as RA.

Playing Carnoustie this week and Spey Valley next week so really looking forward to trying two very different but obviously excellent courses for the first time.

As Jezz says each to their own with how you rate a golf course. To answer Dodgers point about drivers I think there are many so called classic links where you dont need to hit driver anymore, balls go so far these days and you get so much roll out on links too.

Ooh, birdieman. You're in for a treat. Carnoustie and Spey Valley. Very nice. Carnoustie is my favourite ever and having played Spey Valley just a couple of weeks ago I reckon you'll love it. Enjoy.
