So my move up North is now set in stone, I move into a mates spare room on 1st August and I've made enquiries to the 3 clubs closest to what will be my new address in Wythenshawe; Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Ringway and Sale.

Chorlton is by some way the cheapest for my age band (25), but from some of the old threads mentioning it on this forum, several have alluded to greens in not great condition and poor drainage. Unfortunately price is a large factor (the plan is to buy a house early next year with my girlfriend, which may mean repeating this process again in 6-9 months if I move to a different part of Manchester but oh well), so with Ringway having a joining fee to pay in addition to subs it does pretty much write it off unless the others are awful.

Can any of you gents and ladies provide a recent review of any of the aforementioned clubs, or possibly any other local clubs I should be adding to my shortlist? I do plan to try before I buy, but I would be interested to hear any experiences from the clubs / courses.

Thanks in advance!

JB

I haven't played Wythenshawe but I believe it can be deliberately flooed if the River Mersey is in danger of flooding.

I quite like Chorlton, I go there for lessons, although wont be for much longer as my pro is moving. One advantage is they don't use mats in winter, although they sometimes play a shortened course, there are some interesting holes and I think there is enough interest for you not to get bored after a few rounds.
I have only played Sale a couple of times, there are a few interesting holes but not many that stick in the mind.
Ringway, I played it once last year, it didn't really stand out in my mind.

Withington is the course you mean Louise and es you are right it can be deliberately flooded if the river is over flowing. But not a bad course, over the road you have Northenden which is a favourite of mine. They are building a new club house as the last one burnt down not so long ago. They put new greens in a few years ago too. That would be my choice of course around that area.

yeah that's the one! I played Northenden last year, shame about the fire they had. Most of the Mersey clubs are flat due to their location, there is one South Manchester club I know that is very interesting, and that is Reddish Vale, I don't think its too far from where you will be.

They are all nice courses with really great memberships. If i had a preference....it would be Ringway, then chorlton, Withington, Northenden then Sale. Its horses for courses but Ringway imo is in better condition for most of the year.

Write off to them, i'm sure they would give you curtesy for the day and see which you prefer. Ask about social events, how many competitions they play and how the courses play in winter etc. Good luck :)

I haven't played any of the courses you mention but felt I needed to sign up to second Louise_a's comment that Reddish Vale is a cracking track. I am slightly biased as a member but the course is fantastic. It was designed by the chap who designed Augusta National and makes great use of the land, have a look at the website and this link http://golfclubatlas.com/courses-by-country/england/reddish-vale-golf-club/.

I've played every week bar one this winter and only played on temporary greens twice, the greens are fantastic and the people are also a massive asset to the club.

I am a couple of years older than you and they do fantastic deals for members our age, I think the deal is something like £250 for a 22 year old + £50 per year but have a look at the website to be sure.

Sorry for the long post which is clearly focussed on my own club but I think it should be a sure thing for your shortlist. Give me a shout if you have any questions.

Im a member at Davyhulme in Urmston if you fancy a knock there just let me know.

Always in great condition and a breeding ground for champions :D

Reddish vale is a cracking course which I played last year and a membership of around £250 would be a steal.

Just make sure you go in the right way, as it is a 15 minute detour, if you go the wrong end (or as my satnav sent me).

Missed the email alert on my own thread! Only noticed new replies when searching for posts about Northenden just now.

Not yet is the answer, currently waiting to hear if an offer has been accepted on a house in Sale, unfortunately it's SW Sale so the wrong side to be really close to that golf club cluster of Sale, Chorlton, Northenden, Withington & Didsbury. Had a Groupon voucher lesson I almost completely forgot about last night @ Northenden (hence the search about the course). I don't know whether the guy was just trying to get me to sign up for more lessons (I don't think so, Joe seemed a great guy, and a fantastic teacher), but being told that I can be down to single figures in 1 season if I really went for it (cue forum rage) has given me even more motivation to get something sorted.

I also now really want to take my golf clubs to Jamaica next week (2 week holiday at Jewel Runaway Bay, which has an attached course with complimentary green fees), when I wasn't going to before.

Depending whereabouts in SW Sale, you may still be better looking at the Mersey clubs. South of Sale you have Ringway, has a good name but I wasn't too enamoured with it, Dunham Forest, pretty decent bar 4 of 5 flat holes, , Then there is Hale, but I know nothing about it. I suspect they are all pricey and not sure about membership availability either.

Just thought of another not too far away and that is Lymm, there are a couple of Lymm members who post regularly on here.

Thanks! I think I'll be bang inbetween Chorlton-cum-Hardy and Dunham Forest distance wise if we get the house. Unfortunately for me it's top of our budget property wise (should have been obvious from the start that my gf was never going to fall in love with a property at our bottom end), so I'm going to be budget golfing which will help make some of the decision for me at least.

Davyhulme have an offer on at the moment. If there's any left they are offering 40 x 7 day memberships @ £600 each.

Bargain to be fair. The course is always in good nick and it's a good, friendly club.

Judging on your potential new gaff geography probably around 15-20 minutes drive.

There's also a pretty decent crowd @ Sale too. If you're new in the area then I'd think you'd get a warm welcome at both.

Happy to take you round my place for a hit if you ever fancy a knock too.
