As per some previous posts, I have been considering a set of CG16 irons. I have tried them again and I am still hitting them well and they are slightly more pleasing on the eye than my current irons. The Cleveland fitter at the GM final suggested that I could do with the clubs being set a bit flatter to allow a more upright stance. The standard regular Cleveland shaft is fine for my swing and length is OK as well (perhaps could so with them being a bit shorter at a push as I have long arms) and ideally I could do with a couple of layers of grip tape.

Cheapest that I have seen them for with a fitting is between £369 and £400.

Cheapest price online with no fitting, however, has come down considerably. A company I use, Justgolfonline, have the irons for £329 with an code I have giving a further 20% off this weekend. So, I can get them online today for about £260.00.

Really in a quandry as to whether I will have second thoughts if I buy off the shelf again if things go wrong but the price online this weekend is a total bargain.

What are the thoughts of the forum.

From the above, the only fitting is the lie? If the irons are forged (dunno if they are?) then you can do that after you've bought the bargain price ones. And you can do the grips when you want...start with just one club and double wrap that to see if you like it before doing the rest.

I dare say the lie/grips could be adjusted at a later date if you bought the clubs as standard at the reduced price and found them not quite right. You'll probably just see the money you saved then go on that work.

With the code you wont really lose that much money, if any, if you get them and dont get on with them. As others have said lie can be adjusted to a degree (see what I done there :D) so why not?

I agree. A small difference in lie is not that big a deal, so long as you are otherwise well fitted to the shaft, length, grip size etc.

Although I am not sure how a flatter lie will help encourage a more upright swing.

May have got it the wrong way round. Certainly shaft was fine, grip was 2 layers of tape and length was, at a push a quarter inch shorter. I play with standard off the shelf irons at the moment so tempted to give them a go.

I had a go with the CG16's Tour at the Cleveland demo on Thursday too and they surprised me what a good club they are. The guy suggested I wanted a degree flat and was on the cusp of a regular/stiff. I was getting some good numbers off their launch monitor but to be honest I had only popped along to swing a few before the final and wasn't keen on trying to be fitted 35 minutes before my tee time so I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to shaft suggestions.

That said they are a good looking club and pretty forgiving. As Cleveland have a fitting centre at Maidenhead Golf Centre I am tempted to book a session and seeing what the numbers look like so I have something to compare the R11 and I20 (when they arrive) against
