Playing in a 4 ball tonight and on our 12th a guy on his own came over from another tee and wanted to cut in and play the 13th before us. 2 of us were already on the green and his club was 100 yards away. Between the 4 of us we know most members but did not know this lad..

My facial expression was negative but I did not say anything and eventually said Ok but could not understand why he could not play the course in the correct order. He was on the 6th hole which runs adjacent to the 13th.

He seemed annoyed and I felt pretty bad for the rest of the round. Our normal rules prevents cutting in unless there a 1 hole free. I was about to suggest to go and play from where his 2 nd shot would probably be on the 13th which would cause no problems to us.

What would you have done?

I'd have offered to play the hole as a 5 ball, and then let him go ahead on the next whilst the 4 ball putted out. Its a compromise I've offered before under similar circumstances which worked out ok.

We often do similar if a one ball catches up with us during a round or if the approach the first tee as we are going off.

Perhaps I did not explain myself too clearly.

The guy on his own was playing our 6th which is adjacent to our 13th. We were playing the 12th and I had NO idea who he could not have continued to play the 6th. What he wanted to do was cut in from the 6th to the 13th.

Agree with your comments but the circumstances are different

Pretty damn rude if you ask me. Aren't one balls the same as three balls and have no rights of play on a course? Even if they are playing behind never mind on a different hole.

I would have genuinely told him to **** off.

One balls now have the same rights as two and three and 4 balls on golf courses

But cutting across from another hole ? Sorry I would have said no

Historical rule. Single players and 3 ball have the same rights as pairs and fours balls under the rules although I suppose a committee could have rules in place dictating priorities.

Etiquette section.

Priority on the Course
Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, priority on the course is determined by a group’s pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. The term “group” includes a single player.

Had a similar situation today though. Played a 9 hole course and a guy appeared behind us on the 3rd despite not being anywhere in site when we were playing the 1st and 2nd. We let him through on the 5th when he caught up. Then on the 6th we (a 3 ball) came behind him and saw another guy practising his chipping onto the 6th green. They both greeted each other paired up and went down the 7th while we were finishing up the 6th.

This 2 ball took soooo long to play down. They didn't ring the bell on the 7th fairway so one of my group had to run up to see over the hill. They were stood chatting and were well past the bell. Really upset our rhythm. We let a single through not realising it was going to morph into a 2 ball and didn't realise the member of this course seem to simply decide their own order in which to play the course. A group ahead of us disappeared after the 2nd and turned out they had skipped 3 and 4 completely.

Ah, I stand corrected. Still bloody rude tho.

I play on my own quite often while my lad has his group junior lessons, I like it, but I would never dream of asking to be played through, I would just play a different hole.

I was playing on my own the other night, got to our 6th, a dog leg left, with a good hit you can clear the dog leg corner, I hit a good drive which came down about 100yds from the green. As I walked up to play my second the three ball in front to me to tee straight off when I was ready , I did so and as a fur ball we played the 7th together, I picked up on the 7th t let them hole out while I went ahead to play the 8th.

Not quite the same as cutting in but it was nice to be called through by the guys in front.

i would never think of asking to cut in in those circumstances. i would have supported you in telling him to do one.

if i was playing as a single i would expect to be called through if i came up behind a group, but if a group was waiting to play a hole i'd walk up and play the 13th instead. if i asked to cut in on the same hole i'd expect to be told to do one.

Don't see the problem, the guy was obviously just sneaking in a quick 12 holes before an appointment of some kind, unfortunately for him your group just happened to be about to play the hole he wanted to in order to play 12, I assume he was polite in the way he asked and was probably out of sight before too long anyway! I would hope in the same situation a fourball would do the same for me or anyone else!

I agree with this - not sure why the guy is getting so much stick to be honest.

If there was a risk that I'd have held the fourball up, I'd have asked if I could drop on the fairway up ahead but, either way, I wouldn't have held anyone up and Id be disappointed if a fourball didn't offer me that courtesy.

Me neither. My course has got several places where you can skip a hole or two if you want to play a few quick holes and save yopurself a big walk back to the clubhouse. Whilst I probably wouldn't ask to cut in I wouldn't have a problem if someone else did, I mean whats it going to add to your round, 5 minutes?

I quite often jump around our track and would never ask another group to wait while I cut in. If I couldn't play up with them as described above I'd walk ahead but out of harms way and jump onto the next tee while they played their 2nd shots, thus out of the way by the time they putt out

Really strange request from the guy who wanted to cut in!

As I said initially I was about to suggest to go halfway down the fairway and play what would have been his 2nd shot. Our 13th is a par 5.

However it was too late as he obviously thought I was being unreasonable.

Hindsight is wonderful!

Maybe the guy wasn't having a great time and just got the hump that you didn't say yes straight away. It happens but I wouldn't get too hung up about it. I certainly wouldn't let it put me off my remaining holes
