As I've been having back problems for the last 2 weeks, I desided not to play golf this weekend. Thinking I was going to be bored out of my mind, I noticed the Ulster Rally was starting and Finishing in my local town. I used to like watching rally's. I called up the web site on Thursday afternoon to see where and at what times this would be taken place. While looking through the site, I noticed an appeal for marshalls. So I emailed the guy, I got a quick reply and with a phone call I was set for an early start on Saturday morning.
Not knowing what to expect, I arrived at the meeting point, there was about 30 guys arriving aswell. I thought to myself "what the hell am I doing here"? Anyway we all got our bibs with marshals on them and we were paired off. I'd never met any of these people before. We all followed the guy to various points and as we got to our posts started to drop off. I was at number 2, so didn't have to go to far. Road's were closing at 7.15 an hour before the 1st car was due. Spectator's started to arrive and we had to give them information as to where they could stand. Remember these were country roads. We thought an hour would drag in. Different saftey cars went past making sure everything and anything was clear off the roads. Getting closser to the 1st car time we waited. Guys arriving with their cameras always looking to take an inch, some trying to stand were it wouldn't be safe, we addvised them to move along. On the button 8.15am we heard the rip of the 1st car. I couldn't beleive it. I mean right on que. There it was flying past us as if it was a straight road. Every minute a car passed us and I mean every minute. An hour this went on for, fantastic. Most of the spectator's were great with staying behind the rope but we had a few that wanted to get a better angle. The international car's had passed in the 1st hour and then we had the slower guys MK 2 escorts and the like, they really knew how to show the crowd a good time with a few hairy slides round our corner. That took another hour to get them through. About 11am we were told to reopen the road. Then we were told that the road would be closed again at 12.55. The time passed very quickly, as people came and asked question's and advice. 12.55 road closed 13.55 1st car due. Yes, you guessed it right on time zooooom past us, fantastic. Timing was brillant. 2 hours later all the cars had passed our spot without any trouble and we were all happy.
I didn' know what to expect whenever I agreed to do marshall but I can tell you know I'll be looking out for it next year and putting my name down.
So from a boring Saturday ahead it turned out to be one I shall remember for a long time.
The organization was 2nd to none. I couldn't beleive the timing of thing's, everything worked like clockwork, even at my post where I'd never done anything like it before.

The really good thing about Saturday was I didn't get .1 back.

I was in Austria a few years back doing some cross country skiing, and there was a classic car hill climb on the Sunday. These guys were caning old porches, bentleys, MGs, Alfas, Lancias, etc up a snowy mountain road, with spiked tyres, all rear end out action. Brilliant. Some of these cars were worth a fortune (Alfa 8c anyone?), but they were all being thrashed in the true spirit of the event. Sadly some did not make it to the top, and would have needed expensive repairs, but nice to see them being used for something other than driving to a pub on a sunny day.

Ive marshalled the Lurgan park and Circuit of Ireland a few times Ian, you are spot on about the organisation and speed of the cars.
I can remember Bertie Fisher in his ToughMac silver impreza coming past us on his second run on a particular stage, first time round you could see everyone was tentative about this corner, second time round they were up on two wheels promptly followed by everyone else trying the line with no fallers. The atmosphere, noise and smell of rally cars is something no other motorsport can replicate.

I owned the roadgoing version of this and getting to see this up close really made my day.

Is that you hooked now Ian or does the lure of 0.1 back still too strong to resist? :D

Wouldn't say I'm hooked but I really enjoyed it. I think if I'd just been there watching it wouldn't of been as good. As it says on the web site marshalls get closser to the action.
The unfortunate thing about it once they pass you, thats them gone. It's not as if they keep comming round like the racing car's or motorbikes. But still very enjoyable.
I think I'll be out next Saturday getting my .1 back, as my 1st love is golf.

I always loved the Circit of Ireland and lurgan park, there used to be a Eurocables rally in Kirkiston and I loved it - though you are always guranteed worse weather than you get on the golf course, hard to believe but true.
