Soft v's hard balls

I have to admit prov's are the best ball but I am not willing to play them through winter

I have just been looking at some AD333 lake balls. Homer has said before he uses his old balls (ooerr) for practice and that way his shag bag is full of the balls his plays with week in and out. My shag bad consists of about 120 top flites I bought when I started and I have a bag of the better branded ones I either found or bought a bag from some weirdo near where I live (£7.50 for 75 and 25 where Pro V1's!!).

Is it best to practice with the balls you use on the course? I am thinking of either buying some used ones or buying more new ones and when they look worn putting them to one side for when I have enough to take to the range and sticking with the toptocks until that time. What do you guys use?

I use anything for hitting irons, as I don't care how far they go, just the quality of the strike / swing. I can tell from the strike whether it was any good, a hook is a hook, a push is a push.

I only chip and putt with old proV1s, as feel is important for these shots, and I don't want to cloud my judgement.

Ditto, I dont care what I hit to distance but chipping and putting has to be the balls I play.

I would recommend the nxt tours, I think they are exactly what you are looking for. I am currently using them (was using the ad333 before) and they just edge the srixon on most categories I feel. As for the best ball as everyone seems to say the prov1/ v1x is definitely the winner.

theeaglehunter are they worth the extra £5-£7 per dozen though? I have played with them and rated the NXT tour for better distance and softness, but are they worth the extra?

Ive no doubt this will be an unpopular comment but for the sake of a bit of debate i'll throw it in.

I've gone back to using Dunlop Titanium balls from Sports Direct @ about £5 for 15.

(boo hiss)

why?

Its a conforming ball(at least it says so on the box)

At my standard I loose about 3-4 balls a round on average.

In these days of austerity I'm happy to play a provisional(followed by a quick search) for about 30p and move on rather than hold my playing partners up , get frustrated and peed off.

At my standard (on or around 100 gross) I'm not convinced anymore that spending 5-8 times the price warrents the undenyable advantages of a better ball. The problems are with my skill, course management and experience at this level IMHO.

I'm old enough and ugly enough not to give two toots if anyone looks down on me for using a 'joke' ball.

There is currently no difference in my scoring between chaep and expensive golf balls.

When I break 90 i'll look at it again having already experimented with many premium brands.

If and when that happens I think my choice would be for NXT Tours or PTS golf balls. I totally 'get' the 333 but there's something about them that isn't as good as a Titleist.

billy is the one with the bell? ;)

I think ball choice is as individual as putters or, latterly, wedges - me, I can't stand NXT's, gone off Callaway and won't waste Pro V's over winter. It's me for the Srixon route I think (though I did take a sidetrip with Pinnacles - horrible!)

Chubb, I bought mine as A grade balls (Importantly they are not refurbs, so maintain the same characteristics as a new one- I have compared) they merely have minor marks but you would really not mind once you got them as it doesn't affect the way they play. Anyway I paid £28 for 50 and will continue to do so for the near future. A great buy in my opinion.

As for buying new I would probably say in the current economic climate save your money unless you feel that the happenings you described (in terms of ball flight and feel sacrifices) are really holding back your game. If the money isn't really an object buy the nxt tours. But if it was my money I would say they are not worth it.

I hope this helps.

I prefer the older Size 5 Mitre Delta. Can get more bend on set peices, especially if your wearing predators!!!

Softer on the head aswell to help direct into the top corner!

But if I can't get hold of a 3 pack of these I use Pro V1s at £10 per pack of three......Am i having my pants pulled down?

Soft balls for me all year, yeah i think pro v1s are the best out there i just ruin too many of them with wedge shots so they aint worth the money,i tried every brand going to try and find a match for the pro v and the bridgestone b330s is the best not as good but not far off and i got a load cheap so i stuck with them till next year

Unfortunately these days I have less feel and many a muscle ache sensation and feet and hands numbness that prevents me enjoying the benefit of a really good ball, unless Im having a particularly good day, but in the past I would only be found using titleist or callaway as even their soft ones still get the distance, but would offer great feel for the short game..

When I went out on Tuesday (cool) I'd decided to carry on my experiment with the DX2 ball, which somehow I was managing to spin on the greens...(wow..!) but on a couple of holes I decided to use a Warbird I'd had sitting in the corner of my bag & couldn't believe how disapointed I felt using this ball again. Went well enough & to be honest dispite the feel it actually putted quite well. but the feel off the face of the putter or any other club felt really hard & unresponsive. Not at all how I remember a warbird feeling.

Not sure whether its me or the fact I'd had this ball unused for quite some time, but really hezitant to bother with warbirds again as a cheapie, even though they perform well enough. May try one of the new range warbirds to see if there is a difference or not, just as I've recently been impressed with the new range of DX2's, where previously I hadn't some time ago with the old version.
