Yeah hear what your saying when I referred to a handicap certificate I am thinking reasonable players who respect the game`s etiquette but YES new players can have a handicap certificate and act like pratts,maybe new golfers should take an etiquette test which enables them to gain an etiquette certificate cos some bloody need it!!

Trouble is it's not just new players........

We don't have societies but we do have members days although normally well behaved. One thing I have noticed in the last couple of years is a lot of courses, mainly the better ones with reasonably full memberships, massively hiking visitors fees - I guess to restrict numbers but keep similar income. I suspect many other courses are desperate for money and taking whatever they can get. Golf seems to be either getting dearer or more transient. The middle ground may suffer

Not so sure I agree, seems to be a lot of very good clubs that are hunting the revenue, whether through yourgolftravel, groupon or similar deals. I know members of a few top 100 clubs where they are getting increasingly frustrated at the amount of non members turning up on cheap deals, and doing so in pretty large numbers

Might not be very scientific but just checking out some of the courses on Merseyside and a few in Surrey recently and fees seem a lot higher than 2 or 3 years ago. I have been wanting to play Broadstone in Dorset for a while and this year the price has gone from £58 to £68 and the day rate now £95 - that is nearly 20%. I know that others are doing deals but I get the sense that a number of clubs have been hiking a lot recently.

Mind you - others have gone the other way - I remember reading the Golf Worlf Top 100 in 2007 and the K Club was the dearest place in GB&I - €390 or about £310 at the time - you can now get a deal for 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast and 2 rounds for €250

I think a fair few courses have raised their headline rate for sure, but at the same time if you hunt about they then are prepared to offer decent discounts off that headline rate. There are more and more "discount" websites that seem to regularly have decent golf courses represented on them. If you are able to play early midweek then most courses are prepared to do a decent deal, some cant give it away (ie Oxfordshire, £69 for B&B and 18 holes on a sunday night)

I'm not sure how other societies are but I know mine is always decent and respectful. Mostly on the basis that we are in part funded by the boss and are therefore technically liable to disciplinary action. It has been heard of that people have been sacked for the way they behaved at work sponsored social events. We tend to be invited back to each of the venues we use.

On the point of handicap certificates, a club near here has a membership scheme costing £60 plus pay as you play green fees (discounted). On this basis you get get a handicap certificate for £87 and a few hours leisurely stroll. Makes a farce of it all tbh.

Its a bit of a mixed bag really, mostly our societys are mid week and are generally not a problem. In this climate its tough for any club to turn down the income so inevitably you can sometimes get a poor society. They are posted in the diary and website so you can avoid if you so wish.

Tough one this. Are we all a bit NIMBY- ish when it comes to societies?

We all love the chance to play other courses and for example the Forum days are great, but we don't seem to like it when societies visit our own clubs.

Agree though that when you are a guest at anyone else's place you should be on your best behaviour. That's how I was brought up anyway.

Maybe clubs should be clearer about the standards expected and that the Manager/ Secretary should be around to make sure proper standards of behaviour are observed, and have a "quiet word" with the organiser if they aren't.

i don't moan about everything only the following-slow play,snobs,28 h/c asking about lofts on one of their 4 wedges,ignorant people,societies who have no etiquette,a newbie buying the latest gear and not having lessons,a high h/c hacker trying to tell me how i should play,the know it all tosser at the range,women golfers who think i should let the through on the tee because they have to be home for the grandkids,and any one who disagrees with me on anything.

Phew, not on that list. which is a good job really, as I'm playing your course in the next couple of weeks with a view to joining next year. If I see one more multi mat or Tee mat, i'm likely to take the shotgun on the course and take pot shots at the next society that clogs up the course on a Friday afternoon....

At a previous club there was a regular Tuesday group of about a dozen who enjoyed themselves quite loudly that the snobby Ladies used to object to. Bad organisation on their (the Ladies) part for not playing on the other course imo. That group used to spend about 2K weekly in Fees/Food etc!
