Today there was a group of seniors society golfers at the club I play at that were a nightmare.Firstly there manners at the clubhouse left little to be desired, pushing in for drinks, loud, generally rude they had no respect for members some of which had been at the club for 20yrs plus, they clogged up the course with slow play and had nothing good to say about the club....I know clubs need to get golfers in etc but this really is scrapping the barrel to allow these types in,I`m no snob but I make no bones about it I hate society days at my club and I may just join another club to get away from it,the odd pairs foursomes fine but 40 of them no thanks. What are your experiances with this guys?.

Even though my home track is a muni, it's always apparent that a society has been there by excess litter around the course, loads of unreplaced divots and shed loads of pitch marks in the greens. The course manager simply cannot refuse the bulk green fees in the current climate, but my next course will be one that doesn't allow green fees or societies at weekends

Unfortunately not many clubs are in a financial position to turn such trade down, at the end of the day the club has had 40 green fees (and it doesnt cost nothing to let people play on the course so its all profit) and the bar takings are up....... thos sort of thing keeps your membership down and i dare say if you leave to go to another club you will still experience the same woes.... I try to find out when a society are playing and go out before them....

i did a thread last week on this very subject!!!!!! stand by for the flack.

Yeah but you do seem to moan about everything though!. Like others have said, unless your course is exclusive and has a waiting list for members then it wont turn down 40 people paying greens fees, drinks and food. I know how you feel though. We get a couple of society days per year and they really do chop the course up and leave litter everywhere. The worst I have come across though are the rotary club. The day was for charity so I refuse to moan about it but I got stuck behind them one afternoon after work and on the 13th tee the queue was 6 groups deep. At that point enough was enough and I was out of there.

Sums up my reply. It's the main gripe we have about our place but appreciate the revenue allows expenditure on the course improvements and equipment. Plus it helps pay the wages of the good numbers of green staff who are always bustling around the place keeping it in great nick despite the foot traffic of the non members variety who don't seem to care/respect the course as they hack their way round it.

So a necessary evil and we have a board at the pro shop showing the Mon-Fri bookings so can avoid them most of the time. Weekends aren't advertised though which is another gripe but I check with the pro shop. There are a few days a year when you simply can't play 18 holes as massive group going off both tees.

Rather than avoid them I think I would rather join a club that doesent encourage society days,Handicap certificate non members in limited numbers fine but clogging the course and bar up with rude inept riff raff is no fun is it...

i don't moan about everything only the following-slow play,snobs,28 h/c asking about lofts on one of their 4 wedges, ignorant people, societies who have no etiquette,a newbie buying the latest gear and not having lessons,a high h/c hacker trying to tell me how i should play, the know it all tosser at the range, women golfers who think i should let the through on the tee because they have to be home for the grandkids, and any one who disagrees with me on anything.

:):D:lol:
We don't have societies but we do have members days although normally well behaved. One thing I have noticed in the last couple of years is a lot of courses, mainly the better ones with reasonably full memberships, massively hiking visitors fees - I guess to restrict numbers but keep similar income. I suspect many other courses are desperate for money and taking whatever they can get. Golf seems to be either getting dearer or more transient. The middle ground may suffer

Yes for the time being I will avoid the course all together when societys are playing...They had been in the clubhouse prior to their round and were pissed before they even started playing!!honestly it was like a bloody east end jolly to the seaside, the only thing missing was the kiss me quick hats!!good greif has club golf come to this? never like this back in the day.......

Handicap certificate non members in limited numbers

What is this obsession with Handicap Certificates?

A handicap certificate proves one thing and one thing only - ok 2 things and 2 things only...

1. You've joined a club
2. You've put 3 cards in and been given a handicap.

Nothing more. You can be the most obnoxious git the World has ever seen, you could be spitting chewing tobacco all over the place, swearing like a Trooper, taking huge gouges out of the course, taking divots on the green from using a SW because it's a big green, urinating on the flag, take a dump in the waste bins and try to seduce everything in a skirt in the clubhouse, after taking 175 shots to go round in 6 1/2 hours..

But because you've got a Handicap certificate it's alright......

?????

when were you playing behind me IMURG ?

Err...
Yes - that's how they managed to get a handicap in the first place.
Still doesn't mean they can play, will behave or be any different to the Society you're moaning about.

Yeah hear what your saying when I referred to a handicap certificate I am thinking reasonable players who respect the game`s etiquette but YES new players can have a handicap certificate and act like pratts, maybe new golfers should take an etiquette test which enables them to gain an etiquette certificate cos some bloody need it!!
