So what makes an outstanding course?

i was just repeating what the numpty who thinks links courses are boring with no scenery said....

i take it the numpty message was for me .
its sad to see someone who is i suspect to be an adult resorting to name calling .still each to their own .
i think in future you might find it easier to let people think you are an idiot ,rather than typing total tosh and proving it .

when it comes to tosh, i will leave that to you after all its was you that stated that links courses were boring and didn't have any scenery, one of the stupidest things ive seen written on this forum.

i accept you might not like links courses, but to say they are boring with no scenery is idiotic IMO.

and thats it isnt it .its MY OPINION, not yours ,but mine ,so who the hell are you to diss my opinion.just because you think they are nice and pretty you think everyone should .
sad really sad .
anyway have a nice life mate cos i have better things to do than argue with an idiot ,as i would have no chance of winning as you would beat me on experience.

What some see as beauty others may see as bland or boring - that doesn't make them a numpty or make it a stupid thing to say - I have heard and read plenty who say that links golf is boring and dull and the courses are dull and boring - that's their view from what they see through their eyes - that doesn't make them a numpty or a stupid thing to say and it's a valid opinion.

It's the same with people who think lots of trees etc are dull and boring

What's great is there are so many different options.

i wouldn'yt ever say links courses where pretty, rugged Beauty perhaps.

but to say links courses had no scenery is wrong, most of the most scenic courses in the UK are links.

well done for not reverting to name calling though;)

Links courses often have a sea view, and being on sandy soil usually drain very well. I played at Leven Links a couple of years or so ago and loved every minute off it. Quite different to Parkland Golf, if that is what floats your boat! :)

A good design that rewards good shots and punishes bad ones but is still playable for low and high handicappers. Good condition, good price with a decent clubhouse that welcomes visitors and serves good food and drink.

Littlestone is one of my favourite courses I have played

The course itself is visually good , a real of golf with some cracking holes but twice one of the best things about it has been the way we were treated as guests - first time there after we finished members came up to us asking how we found the course and gave us some food from a Capts lunch and they were genuine then the next time me and Rich played in a pairs open and the two people playing with us pulled out so the Capt and his wife put there names down so that we had someone to play with - invited us back also to play with cheap rates

If I walk away with a glow and wanting to play the course again that to me is a sign of a great club
Playing a nice course with top partners always adds to the experience.;) Actually you played with Chrisd there didn't you, so scrub that notion.:)

Most beautiful course I have ever played is Royal County Down. Just saying.

Stunning yes, but after the first 5 holes, you turn away from the sea, and it's kind of not as nice.

Don't get me wrong, holes like the ninth are amazing, but I love the ones near the sea. It's links golf, and I want to see the sea!

And where ever you are, you can still see the Catholic Church in Newcastle, which blights the view. It's an architectural monstrosity.

Love the course, it's certainly in my top one of one though!

You seem to have forgotten the view of the mountain as you turn for home. The natural land is beautiful to me. Sea is sea.

For sure, it's stunning. I have holidayed in New Castle five years in a row. I went to school locally, and love the local area. The mountains of mourne are an amazing back drop. But, I love the tees by the sea, and to me, once you have played these, the level drops. It just does. From fantastic, to just amazing!

Ive only ever played two links courses.. Birkdale - not exactly stunning scenery... and Leven links, that was decent enough..

Not played royal lytham or st annes but i know for a fact there is definitely no stunning scenery at either........

Not all links have decent scenic views, St Anne's Old Links is a prime example, it's pretty flat so did nothing for me, you can see the airport and Blackpool pleasure beach but it has nothing to offer on the eye IMO. Formby has some stunning scenic views but not of the sea, I think you can only just squeeze a sight of water from 1 hole, links that run right by the side of the sea offer far more scenic views like Wallasey, Wedt Lancs, Royal Porthcawl etc, even Saunton Ssnds has no sea views as I remember as it's protected by a huge dune/sand bank, however, it still has some great inland scenic views of its course, so, what makes a great scenic view is all down to the individual, I think because someone doesn't agree or see links courses offer scenic views is far from being a numpty, the biggest numpty is the person that can't accept that someone looks for different things to them and not everything is black & white.

For me the view is secondary....and just adds to the 'experience'. What I like is to stand on the first tee with the course stretching out in front of you just inviting you to 'give it a wack' enticing you into the course as it unfolds before you....

And this can be a links, parkland or heath....IMO.

I have never played a links course and thought "this is beautiful". "Brutal" maybe, or "rugged", but never beautiful. Maybe I've played the wrong ones???
I've played plenty of heath or parkland courses, where "beautiful" does cross my mind.
