I would be interested to know what forum members think is a reasonable amount to pay or actually pay for a days golf assuming playing 18 holes at a good standard, semi-private club, good condition year round. (No mats or temporaries in the winter). Usual thing Coffee and bacon sandwich on arrival and a meal after the round.

Amounts for visiting as:

a) Society
b) Visitor

Personally I would consider the following quite reasonable

a) 35 pounds
b) 45 pounds

I'd probably be willing to stick an extra tenner on top of both to secure a game at a good track.

Throw in a bacon butty and a coffee (if you are used to London prices) then you have a bargain!! :)

I'm not sure what the actual rounds have cost when I've played the likes of Forest of Arden as you generally stay overnight, so the accomodation is thrown in to the mix.

I think £50.00 would be ok for a quality course. If it was a UK premier course then of course I would be prepared to go a little more.

Even better, take a client and expenses it !!

I wouldnt pay more than £30 for a round , £40 max for an open day with the lunch and dinner included too.

I pay more than enough for my subscription without paying through the nose to play elsewhere.

You also need to take into account where the course is situated. Down here in Devon we can't charge top dollar, not because of the quality, but because of location.

Totally dependant on the course TBH.

There are some gash courses that are overpriced and some gems that are very under-priced and its only through word of mouth, reviews and experience that you find out.

I for example, wouldnt pay £10 to play deangate near me, but on the same note if West Malling was £40 I would gladly pay that.

Princes is about £80 a green-fee, would I pay that? Im not 100% sure, yes it is a very, very good course and a true test of ones abilities in a fantastic setting and yes it is a former open championship venue but if I look at what I can get of a similar calibre for sub-£50, or even sub-£30 (lydd) it does make me think twice.

I aim to find courses that charge

a)20
b)25
And consider that a reasonable amount to pay for any course
But as I know that in the realworld that is virtually impossible to find at all the courses I like to visit.

The most I'd normally consider paying per course & this includes per day is
c)45

And then there is catagory d) courses I know I'd rather not pay any more than a) or c) maximum, but will just have to pay the grin & bare it price. This I wont disclose & will change as to how much my flexible friend can also bare.

I would generally feel hard pressed to pay over £35 for a round on a fairly decent course. There are enough places up and down the country that charge around that amount so cannot really justify more. OK, would splash out to play a big name course (hence willing to cough up for the Belfry trip) but otherwise feel that £35 is my limit.

I know I can with the aid of a 2for1 play the PGABelfry for £20

And I would consider this a reasonable price to expect to pay for anywhere & I mean anywhere.

Anything over that & you really are paying out needlessly

Okay so we're not going to get StAndrews, Brabazon, 2010, or any others of that ilk for that. But I still consider £20 is what any golf is really worth.

I've paid £45 for a dayticket at Royal StDavids & you'd struggle to get better golf anywhere for that money & even that I balked at somewhat. Though still paid it.

Now that's the difference, what we consider reasonable & what we would pay.

This is the very reason why some courses will always command extortionatly high prices, is because we are prepared to pay them.

I think it actually depends on what you can afford - there are ways and means of getting 'cheap' golf but to be honest the more you pay the better the course, with a few exceptions, what you are willing to pay is up to you.....

Old Head is nearly 300 euro a round and I have to say the day we played was so good we went back the next day....

It really depends where and when more than anything - you also have to remember some of these clubs have a fairly expensive membership to sustain, so if you make the green fee too cheap then what is the point of joining....

Don`t really like paying to visit club`s in the winter as the course is usually not in the best condition. Have a days golf booked at Woodhall for four, at the end of June and it`s £95 each for 36 holes, that`s with no food. Not sure what it is for 18 holes but that would depend on what course you play. Hollingwell this summer is £100 for 36 holes, no food. They are alot of money but they are top quality courses. I think this year, what with money being very tight, there is going to be some good deal`s about.

Max of 50 for a very very good course no more than 30 for the average decent course, but for top courses I would be willing to pay the going rate for the course and the days event itself.

I paid £150 ish for RCD, no food, and it is worth it. I am paying 95 for the Grove this Sunday, and it will be good. I can do about 2 to 3 expensive rounds a year, but the others need to be sub 50.
I paid 35 today to play Milford nr Guildford, and really enjoyed it.

One thing though. If I pay more than 50, I want to choose what tee I play off. No yellows.

Good point about being allowed to play off the tees you can choose Murph. I heard that if you play the West at Wentworth you are not allowed to play off the Tournament tees despite the cost. Personally if I play at a Tour venue I want to play it off the tees the pros use for the experience ( who cares about the score).

I've got two "expensive" days out coming up.
St George's Hill in Surrey is £110.00 for the day, including food. Top notch course, and whilst it's a lot of money, it's a superb day out.
In August I am playing at Hankley Common. Never played it before but I know guys that have played there and have visited the website. It looks absolutely superb and is another one that it just over £100.00 for the day.
I initially gulped at the prices but then remembered that about 6 or so years ago I paid £80.00 for a days golf at The Berkshire (two fantastic courses and both in my top ten) without food, so didn't think it was too bad.
But at the other end of the scale, I can get a days golf at Lewes in Sussex for £20.00 on a Sunday (using a 2fore1 voucher) and always leave the course with a smile on my face. Exceptional value for money.
On an "average" course, once the green fee gets up to around £30-£35.00 a round I start to squirm.
