Here's the new
Ping G20 lofts.

G20

4-Iron 23.0°
5-Iron 26.0°
6-Iron 29.0°
7-Iron 32.0°
8-Iron 36.0°
9-Iron 40.0°
PW ....45.0°
SW .... 50.0°

Now compared to an old set from 20 years ago

3-Iron 20.0°
4-Iron 24.0°
5-Iron 28.0°
6-Iron 32.0°
7-Iron 36.0°
8-Iron 40.0°
9-Iron 44.0°
PW ....48.0°
SW ....56.0°

Notice how the loft gap in the longer irons is only 3 degrees but 4 in the old clubs?

Now, how many extra wedges can they sell us?

Bob
the 50 you quote for the SW is wrong mate.
The G20 SW is 54 degrees, it's the "U" (or gap) wedge that's 50.
Too clunky for me. I'll wait to see the new i20's when they come out

I suspected that too.
I was just quoting from here

The point it the 3 degree gap at the other end

Aren't all the manufacturers doing this?

I just bought a new set of Mizuno's and my old set of 12 yrs ago are longer, much longer

True to an extend, but you would need to look at the launch conditions to get the full picture. Modern heads are designed to launch higher, and so the actual loft might need to be dialled down a bit.

i think thats quite the opposite of whats been suggested.

id agree with bob on tis one, no matter the head design(within reason) if you change the loft you cant call it a comparable club just becuase of the number on the back.

personally im trying to get a mx200 gap wedge as the bladed cleveland boyo isnt forgiving enough on a full 100yard shot to a green for me.

so really they advertise these amazing irons none of which are shot engouh to hit full 110-100yards or long enough that you wont have to buy a hybrid or two at the other end of the bag/

so no matter how good these clubs unless you play a pitch and run/punch/1/2 swing you cant use any of them for getting down from 110 yards.

Can you not just leave 120 yards or whatever is more suitable then?

There should be an internationally recognised standard that says that a 7 iron is x degrees and a 5 iron is z degrees.

one manufacturers 7 iron being the same as another manufacturers 8 iron is just bonkers

Come on guys, sort it out

no id rather be closer, i think that the whole notion of i do better from 120 rather than 90-100 is flawed.

from 120 you are more impressed by getting anywhere on the green than you are from sub 100

the closer you are the closer you hope your next to go.

i think that having to change straight from a players cavity to a small headed blade also make these shots harder, hence why i fancy a matching mizuno players GW.

i agree with BRendy, that irons should have a loft on them, but i suppose it would be easier if they were all the same.

all in all, i hate when someone with some chunky callaways big bertha irons says "what you hitting here" as if it relates in anyway to whether he swings faster or better than me/or anyone.

but hey we cant stop the manufacturers progression so if they think this is the best for everyone then ok :)

what i dont get is that a GW isnt included with these clubs strong lofted clubs.

Phil

My Adams did come with a gap wedge. 50 degree.

The irons come in 4 to gw, or, in old money 3 to pw if you look at the lofts and not the numbers on the heads.

Spot on bobmac, I think it is a con,its all to do with marketing most companies have changed the loft of clubs without telling you and then market their clubs saying you will hit them farther.

Its the same with the Drivers nearly every year they come out with new drivers claiming you will hit them farther. So how can they make these claims? They just make the shafts longer so technically you could hit them longer.

Why are they selling us drivers that are to long for most of us? most of the tour pros use drivers with shorter shafts so if they cant hit drivers with longer shafts how the hell can we.

You mean the additional length doesn't come from:

"Inverted Cone Technology"
"Multi-Functional Sole"
"Progressive topline thickness"
"Floating CTP structure"
"Multi-Material Cavity Badge"
"Hyperbolic Face Technology"
"Precision Notch Weighting"
"3D Muscle Pad"
"Under Cut Forged"

And it isn't just because a 8 iron is now called a 9 iron? :D

Thats why I said more suitable, but the points you make about the closer you expect to be closer to the green, are valid and good.

I think bob has it spot on regarding wedges and how many "specialist" wedges you need, but surely this is driven by the consumer/player wanting more and more distance?
