Smoking!!

I have never smoked in my life. Having watched my mother smoke herself to death and my best friend die of lung cancer at the age of 49, you may understand I am vehemently anti smoking.

Smokers by nature are inconsiderate and selfish. They refuse face up to the mass of evidence against passive smoking. They only cite their own rights and freedom of choice and completely ignore the rights of others to go where and when they like without suffering secondhand smoke.

The golf course is no safe haven from the inconsiderate smoker. If he needs to attend to his addiction, then at least have some thought for others. At least light up downwind and consider your fellow players. Then I won’t have a problem , it's just him with the problem

I will guarantee if you ask 100 smokers if they considerate smokers, 100 will say they are. Well perhaps they are just thoughtless

Genuinely sorry for your losses. That said... what a bunch of sh1t you talk!!!! you want to put everyone who smokes in the same bracket?...

Now I see why the elderly and female amongst us get so worked up about unfair and ill-informed generalisations.

what about the playing partners who've eaten half of India or raw garlic the night before, they never once stood downwind of me.......inconsiderate sods:whistle:

DarthVega, I think I can alleviate your fears, there is absolutely no evidence that passive garlic, passive Indian, or passive farts for that matter, can cause cancer. So don’t worry too much.
It’s not the smell of burning tobacco that concerns me; it’s what it does to your health

As for the others who attack my views, you’re right it’s never right to generalise and on reading back I can understand how you have interpreted it that way. My view is about “smokers in general” and not “all smokers”. Although I stick by my view that all smokers will say they are considerate, never met one who thinks otherwise.

So I’m sorry to those who I offend, but smoking offends me. You may think I’m talking Sh1t Alex, but I’m not smoking it

the risk from passive smoking, at a golf course of all places would be minimal. i think you are going too far to be offended by someone smoking on the course. they dont blow it in your face! if you feel that strongly about it then you just simply dont play with smokers.

i used to try and smoke while playing, but it was difficult trying to putt while holding the bong...
HAHAHA actually made me laugh proper then

as for smoking on the course i do it. i dont drop my butts on the floor and will continue to do it. i dont blow it in anyones face so am not doing anyone any harm. If it offends someone tough things they do offend me but i just let it slide and carry on. If it offends my playing partners id be suprised as out of everyone i play with only 2 ppl dont smoke one of which is my dad so think hes kind of used to it now being i smoke in bedroom

Well actually I would say none existent rather than minimal. If you check what I wrote. I have no problem if they are considerate and stand down wind on the tee.

To be quite honest I would never dream of making an issue of it on the golf course even if they were blowing it in my face. I might make a jokey remark, but keep my thoughts to myself, and you don’t usually get a choice who you play with in a comp anyway. If you did who would want to play with a grumpy old sod like me

Smiffy is a great one for the odd roll up or twenty on the way round. Never bothers me if someone smokes on the course. Their life. However like Shaunmb my dad died of lung cancer and my mum is currently fitghting the disease and both were heavy smokers so I accept what it can do and I've also never had a fag in my life and intend to keep it that way. Funny enough my biggest fear if I play with someone who does smoke, particularly in a dry summer is that they've actually put it out and the course doesn't suddenly go up in flames

I smoke roll ups generally and actually find I swing better with one in my mouth, a bit like the mouth guard thingy, stops me gritting my teeth/clenching or whatever

although I swing better its usually a 30 yard top insted of a 20 yard fat ;)

My father lingered for over a year with a smoking related illness before it beat him. 5 years later my mother died a truly horrific death due to smoking - its not always the arteries around your heart that fur up. Imagine the arteries around your bowel dying, and then your bowel just dies inside of you. My mother in law had a respitory arrest 3 yrs ago, and now we have an 86yr old child to deal with.

I believe it is the smokers choice. And unless they light up in a confined space where I am I don't care. I hate the nanny state that tells us 2 bacon sandwiches a week and 10 units of beer etc. BTW, I've never ever smoked and never ever will but I won't criticise someone else for their life choices providing its legal.

I haven't go a problem with any of my playing partners smoking, normally they light up on the walk from the tee to fairway. As long as they putt the fag butt in the bin I'm happy

Contrary to popular belief, I'm not a heavy smoker during a round of golf, sometimes I surprise myself and find that I have only smoked maybe a couple during the whole round. I roll my own though, which can be a pain if the weather is a little inclement, if I smoked packet cigarettes I would most probably smoke more during a round due to the convenience factor. I do tend to smoke quite a bit immediately before a game. Nerves I suppose!
I do consider myself to be a considerate smoker. If I start rolling a ciggie when one of my playing partners steps onto the tee or is about to play a shot I will immediately stop what I am doing whilst they play their shot so that I don't distract them in any way. Also, I will not "spark up" while they are about to play.
Each to his own.

I have never been a smoker either and I have never felt the urge to start either. I don't mind people smoking on the course. I try to stay downwind because I hate the smell of cigarette smoke.

I can fully understand your anti smoking stance that you take. But it is unfair to say that we are inconsiderate to others. I do not stand next to people smoking on hte course that do not smoke themself as I was brought up to have mannars. Also if you are looking at it from a health point of view then lets ban sugar filled drinks and chocolate to overweight people in the pro shop as it can cause heart problems and diabetes in later life. Let us ban alcohol in the clubhouse as it can cause liver disease.Everyone does things that can affect heir health but that is their own choice and I do not feel that anyone else has the right to criticise anyone for hteir lifestyle choices.
