small cash prizes

In which case i guess most male golfers should probably give up thier amateur status

Well, by the rules it is a breach of amateur status for clubs to pay cash as prizes.

It's more realistic for clubs to set the correct example uphold the rules.

Because it's a very convenient rule to brush off and ignore.
The power of cash and corruption.

Cash and corruption

It's hardly thousands of pounds people are talking about for goodness sake

If you really have an issue with it then speak to the R&A and voice your concerns - if it's something they think is something to worry about then no doubt they will do something OR of if it's something that isn't anything to really worry about I guess they will do nothing.

I don't understand your point.
What is there to contact the R&A about?

The rules are very clear, if you think it's okay to break or ignore this rule because it suits you, shame on you.

Well if you are that concerned about the rules breaks contact the R&A to let them know what is going on

If it's troubling that much then do something - speak to the authorities and ask about these tours offering prizes over the limit or cash prizes.

If i had specific knowledge of this happening I would be more than happy to, as should anyone else.

What would you do if you were awarded £100 cash prize in a club comp, knowing it is strictly against the rules?

Don't all the "titleist , Nike , Trilby " tours etc all have prizes above £500 ? There is your starting point

And I have never ever seen any club comp offering £100 cash prizes - every single club/pro am/etc has been either golf equipment or vouchers - never cash.

At ours it's in voucher's keeps the money in the club. I also thought that we (club golfers) could not win cash.

I never really understand this comment or view, most if not all Pro shops are individual retail businesses with the Pro on a retainer, thus the vouchers and spend is not "within the club" per se, its revenue for the Pro only.

It's becoming obviouse that some are ok with some rules being broken, I wonder where they draw the line. Not surprised at who fits into which category.

Guess if its obvious you wouldn't mind naming names then.

You got one bite at least....

I'm still not clear what's OK as far as cash. Is it just club sanctioned comps that cant pay cash? What about swindles where we all chuck a tenner and the winner can get a pretty decent prize.

That's fine as its sweeps. It's just club sanctioned comps and EGU or County sanctioned comps

Swindles have their own HC and rules etc and you can play for whatever you want

Paddy, basically it's the difference between playing between your mates, ie roll ups, swindles etc, and official comps run by bodies that report to the national or county unions, ie governing bodies.

I can obviously understand that a few quid here and there isn't really much to worry about in the big scheme of things, but somewhere there has to be a cut off - it just so happens that the current cut off is £0. If it changed to £5, £10, £50 or whatever, so be it.,but right now it's zero pounds and zero pence so that's what should be adhered to until further notice.

A club I know of (defo not mine, as if it was I could be sanctioned, and suspended) wrote to the RandA regarding running an auction (banned under the rules) and paying out several thousand to the winner.

The answer they received was pretty much they don't give a toss.

The better question is, if they don't care, why don't they change the rule book?

Did you see the correspondence?

i play at a resort course so the pro's shop is run by the hotel chain for the hotel chain. So no independent pro running our shop.

No. But the guy who wrote to the RandA was a private letter regarding this specific competition, and the club response was we are ok with what we do, we have had a communication from the powers that be.

If it was wrong, it would be wrong.

It's happening again this year. Last year the winners won proper money, way more than the £1000 won by the pro who won our pro am.
