Their football coverage is totally skewed towards the 'greatest' (LOL) league in the world to the exclusion of all else. Well some of your subscribers are not English, and would like a bit of balance for our subs (and I speak as a Bolton ST holder).

To be honest, the Premiership is the best league in the world, hence why we have a FIFA president doing all he can to stop English sides reaching the Champ League final & semi's every year as has been the cash for the past 5 years.

The Championship & below get less coverage than the prem as there are fewer fans, the same goes with Scottish football, but I thought Scotland, Ireland & wales had a BBC channel of their own.

So I guess SKY can't complain when Scottish viewers start ditching their subs.

As for best league, easily it's La Liga. EPL is the richest by far, but defo not the best.

Parmo, if you go in the summer, and it is a short one, blink and you'll miss it, you will get bitten to death by midges, and the rest of the year it is cold and wet. Where I am we get 800mm a year, better than much of England.

That said, if the rain ever stops, and the fog ever lifts, it is beautiful, and believe it or not, the people can be quite friendly too.

Murph, you have a typical Sassenachs misinformed opinion of Scotland's glorious weather , text below is straight from the Met office - if you head to Fort William you will get wet, go to to St Andrews however and you'll probably stay dry!
We aren't the ones getting flooded every summer cos we weren't stupid enough to build houses all over flood plains!

Sunshine -
Generally, Scotland is more cloudy than England, due mainly to the hilly nature of the terrain and the proximity of low-pressure systems from the Atlantic. Even so, parts of Angus, Fife, the Lothians, Ayrshire, and Dumfries and Galloway average over 1,400 hours of sunshine per year , though not perhaps with the annual totals of over 1,700 hours achieved along the south coast of England. The dullest parts of Scotland are the more mountainous areas, with an annual average of less than 1,100 hours of sunshine over the mountains of the Highland region.

Mean daily sunshine figures reach a maximum in May or June, and are at their lowest in December. Wind and cloud play their part, but the key factor is, of course, the variation in the length of the day through the year. The relatively high latitude of Scotland means that although winter days are very short, this is amply compensated by long summer days with an extended twilight  great for golf. On the longest day there is no complete darkness in the north of Scotland. Lerwick, in Shetland, has about four hours more daylight (including twilight) at midsummer than London.

Rainfall-
There is a general misconception that the whole of Scotland experiences high rainfall. In fact, rainfall in Scotland varies widely, with a distribution closely related to the topography, ranging from over 3,000 mm per year in the western Highlands (comparable with rainfall over the mountains of the English Lake District and Snowdonia in Wales) to under 800 mm per year near the east coast (comparable with the Midlands of England). (Note that rainfall also includes snow, which is melted and measured as rainfall.)

Typically, measurable rainfall (an amount of 0.2 mm or more) occurs on over 250 days per year over much of the Highlands, decreasing to around 175 days per year on the Angus, Fife and East Lothian coasts. In comparison, the driest part of Britain, along the Thames Estuary in south-east England, averages around 150 days per year with measurable rainfall.

The frequency of thunderstorms in Scotland, around three to nine days per year, is relatively low compared with an average of nine to 15 days over England . The number of thunderstorms can vary widely from year to year, but in general the northern and eastern coasts of Scotland average only three or four days with thunder per year, whilst inland values range from nine in the south to six in the north.

There, doing my bit for Scottish Tourism!

Very informative.

Where do the midges fit into all this?

I have holidayed in Scotland a number of times, mainly cycling, and base my sassenachs opinion on what I have experienced. The last 2 weeks I spent in Edinburgh we had 1 hour of visiblity per day, between 13.00 and 14.00 before the fog came back down, and visiblity was less than 100 yards. Golf was a definate no. As was cycling.

I have spent time up near Fort William in superb weather, and been eaten alive by the midges. (Florida is no better either by the way). When not being eaten, I was blown to bits by the wind.

The other thing with Scotland is nothing is ever open.

My wife ran the Loch Ness marathon (in 3 hrs 20) whilst I waited in Aberdeen It was a nice day, and I could have happily sat in beer garden and waited (sorry, supported), but because it was Sunday, the pubs didn't open until 13.00, as opposed to 11.30 down south. Shops neither.

Oddly, if I didn't live near London, my next choice would be Edinburgh.

Strange comment about pubs, I thought that we did better than you as you used to kick out at 11pm whereas we could go to 12, now pubs can open whenever they want I think. You must have been in the wrong part of Aberdeen, anywhere near the harbour you'll get pubs open any time of day to serve oil rig lads and sailors who have been dry for weeks.
Can't argue with Fort Bill and midges, brother lived there for a while and they are bad, ok through the day but by 5pm - lookout!
We in the east don't get bothered by midges generally - you need open water or bog and being free draining here they're not a problem, more likely in the west.
I'm not going to claim we have a better climate than England cos we dont but east and west scotland are hugely different in climate. The har you got in Edinburgh could affect the English coast as well couldn't it?
I spent 5 weeks working in Notts one January, dank and wet and most unpleasant for the duration, preferred our crisp frosty days with sun far more or snow. Can dig out the x-country skis when that happens.
If HID was at Loch Ness why were you waiting 2.5 hours away in Aberdeen?? :o

Midges.....a common misconception.....yes you may get them in and around Loch Lomond,Glencoe and Torridon areas and some other places in the west but I would say 90 percent of my lovely country never sees them so please stick to facts.
Parmo I too watched that progamme last night and wasnt it fascinating??!!

birdie, I am greatly impressed, particularly by your reference to the mountains of England! :)
You did miss another smiley for Scotland - apparently the average sunshine over the 'mountainous' regions of England is less than that of the Highlands.
However, on my trip to Fort William we never had a dry day. :(

having done my bit for Q&C in Norway, both winter and summer, I can state (and have the residual lumps to prove it even after a lot of years :() that Southern Norway in particular, which is of 'similar' latitude, is also plagued by midges in summer, especially around water.

beautiful country and people no wonder you fought so had to defend it. done the ben in glorious sunshine...breath taking...reduced to tears by the magnificent landscape. never been bit by a mossy/midge anywhere in the world maybe i dont taste right!and if it rains......well hasnt any one heard of whisky.

Yeah, the Salmon farm was pretty cool, but that fella shouting and his raindeer come running down from the mountain. When the heli was getting the views, I couldnt help but think of decent places to plonk a course :o

Going back to the EPL not being the best, trust me I have spoken to many Spanish football fans and since last season was the first they got EPL free on TV they know La Liga is all about diving, which to anyones mind is cheating, like it or not but the EPL is the best in the world, thats why we had 3 teams in the semi finals of the champ league :)

Murph I love the way you suported you wife ....... 130 miles away lol ;)

Gree with other comments about the broadcast, supplied bu host's, Americans are patriotic to the point of being Ar$£$. No one else matters to them. I saw 2 or 3 of Forsythes (sp) shots and thought the same, why didn't they show more, In fairness I don't think they showed that much of michelson, probably because he wasn't really in contention. Charlie Wi was with the leading contenders and didn't get much air time either. Overall I thought the coverage was CRAP.
I think they are a bit lost when there is no tiger to cover.

Excellent that ther was another euro winner, felt for Sergio again, he was maybe 3 foot from glory, had the ball bounced forward instead of back into the water i think it would have been a different story.

Scotland, beuetiful country, been skiing a couple of times a few years ago. Was in Edinburgh in May (bright sunshine).
Didn't see any midges on any visit. If you want midges I have them in abundance in the garden, around the pond. If anyone wants some sending you're welcome i'll even post free of charge. :D

scots are so anti english i don't think it'd matter what the subject matter was, there would be something to bash the English about!

Scottish football is bobbins Rangers and Celtic are the two top teams and relative to everyone else they're getting worse year on year because they have no decent opposition in the SPL.

I'm actually finding the opposite now that I live in England. THe English are unbeleivably anti-Scottish, it's just that you take it for granted as 'normal' behaviour. Do we have an equivalent of 'Jocks' or 'Sweatys' for instance which we are invariably referred to?

No we don't, we'll always refer to you as English (and don't bother with sassenach, only the English actually use that term).

Do we give you the rub down - of course we do, and love it when you lot lose at football, but we don't carry around this patronising attitude about everything and everyone south of the border like the English do in reverse.

Scottish football is bobbins Rangers and Celtic are the two top teams and relative to everyone else they're getting worse year on year because they have no decent opposition in the SPL.
This quote is typical. Scottish football is bobbins because rangers and Celtic are the top two teams? What does that even mean? In what way does it make English football any better because Man U and Chelsea are the top two teams?

They're getting worse year on year I agree with, but it has nothing to do with the opposition, and everything to do with the lack of money they get from TV compared to the big country's leagues, so they can't compete any longer for the top players.

By your logic, what was Rangers excuse for being pants in the 80s? They not only had Celtic, but Aberdeen and Dundee Utd to compete against, and were absolutely nowhere for a number of years becasue of it. There are very few leagues where more than two clubs are genuine title challengers in any year, England are as good an example of that as anyone.

So to sum up your point - we shouldn't get any coverage of our sportsmen and women because Scots are pants, and should be made to watch English sportsmen instead.

Not at all, just stop your constant whining because a scot hasn't had media coverage.

i could reply to several more of the "points" you made, but to be honest i can't be bothered.

you won't catch an Englishman saying " boo hoo they didn't show our boys, it's not fair. everybodies racist except us"

It's a funny thing but the producers of golf programs sometimes have a very odd way of following players, e.g., in the Ladies Open Championship at Sunningdale they managed to miss all of Paula Creamer's birdies and when the finally got to her she had fizzled out of contention. Another example is Brian Davis on the US PGA tour - he's often in contention but rarely gets suitable attention; if you like the producers were 'forced' to include him recently and missed out most of his good work. I guess they can only show just so much but they do get it wrong from time to time. Just the way it is.

Gents, please relax. This is the golf forum the banter one is around the corner, which I have heard is alive and kicking for football and the likes.

Going back to the point, I think Sandy Lyle got a lot of coverage at the Open, he is Scottish isn't he?

scots are so anti english i don't think it'd matter what the subject matter was, there would be something to bash the English about!

I like England, I like the people, it's cultures, I holiday there, I have english family and I visit it very often.
In fact, I would go so far as to say that it's my second favourite country. I love it.
Do I support them in sporting events? No.
But that's what sporting rivalry is all about. We don't have to hate each other to have a rivalry.
Look at the Merseyside derby for an example of what I mean.
I know that most English people say that they always want Scotland and Wales to do well, but I don't really want you to.
I always respected Alan Shearer when told that after they had beaten Holland 4-1 at Euro'96 that if England had kept a clean sheet, Scotland would have went through he replied "So what? I don't really care about Scotland" Fantastic!
That's what I want to hear.
Also, the nonsense during Euro 2004 when every English presenter was going about asking any Scottish guests if they would be supporting England was embarrassing. Andy Murray's still getting a hard time because he dared joke about it. Dougray Scott told Lovejoy not to be ridiculous on Soccer AM. Why was the need so great that every Scot had to support England? Are you so insecure that you need and want everyone to love you? I couldn't care less if no-one supported us. In fact I'd rather you didn't.

Scottish football is bobbins Rangers and Celtic are the two top teams and relative to everyone else they're getting worse year on year because they have no decent opposition in the SPL.

For a country our size, with the current economic restrictions that our league operates under, I would say that the Old Firm have no right to be anywhere near the league section of the Champions League never mind the last 16. And for both of them to make the UEFA cup final in the last 5 years is almost beyond belief!

Regard,

Atticus.

I have never been to Scotland but after watching that program I am thinking of taking a long weekend away with the wife. It may or may not be St Andrews to which the wife does not know yet!!

Parmo, do go to St Andrews but on your way there nip round the coast road and pop down to the beach carpark at Kingsbarns, nice wee beach but also a coastal path where you can wonder at Kingsbarns links.
Then go up to St Andrews, bag a couple of those caramel filled donut things they are famous for and wander down to the Old Course, lean on the railings by the 18th green and watch a few groups play the 18th and also see the folk going off the 1st. It's hard to describe but I guess only a golfer knows the feeling! I stand there and watch for ages, take in the sea air, I kid you not it really is a special place if you are a golfer. All those images like Sanders missed putt, Sevvy's fist pumps in 84, Rocca's fluff and subsequent hole out from the Valley of sin. You owe it to yourself to get up there.
ps Nip back via Crail harbour on a Saturday and you can get lobsters prepared from live once the fella has stopped scaring the tourists with them!
I spent 2 weeks in the East Neuk of Fife last summer and having been pretty well travelled in my younger years I can honestly say it was one of the best holidays I've had. A golfers paradise!
Put your name in the ballot for the Old Course, might get lucky. There is plenty shopping for the wife whilst you tackle the Old Lady! ;)
