Just had an email from the Captain, asking the members to vote on keeping Sky. It is costing the club nearly £5,500 a year.

Do you have sky at you Club, and do you think it is worth the cost ? Personally I have voted to ditch it.

Don't have it.
Would probably make a lot more revenue in the bar during the football season if we did, but whether it would be enough to even cover costs let alone be beneficial I guess has been weighed up and decided against.
Can't say I disagree.

We ditched sky a while ago as costs were becoming astronomical. Not sure how they 'rate' an individual golf club, but, they seem to think money grows on trees ;)

The argument about extra bar revenue doesn't ring true. You'd have to up bar prices and sell way more than normal to even stand a chance of breaking even.

Our place has just been offered a 6 month heavily discounted trial. personally i dont think its worth it, even at a fraction of the cost.

Of course it does. It's pretty much the only argument for any pub or club paying for sky, because they hope to increase bar revenue.
Whether for any specific club in a specific set of circumstances it makes financial sense is something that each would have to judge for themselves.
My club has decided against it and I agree with the decision. Doesn't mean the argument doesn't make sense and for some clubs would go the other way.

We have a streaming service at my club, where we have a roaming satellite, which was installed because the steward was using his own sky card in the lounge to keep costs down!!

We don't have it. Got rid of it years ago. Unless you are a sports pub in the middle of town then I cannot see how you would reap the benefit of having it.

how does that work? interested in the technicalities and legalities

We have the full package including BT Sport and as far as I can see the costs heavily outweigh any potential benefits. In addition it creates friction on some Saturdays between the "rugger buggers" and the "football yobs".

It would have to come to a vote to get rid of it as some quite vociferous and influential members use it rather than pay for it at home but nowhere near enough to merit the cost of £5000+ p.a.

We got rid of Sky some years ago now. No way we could justify getting it back. And I don't think there is much call from the members for it back.

A few years ago before I got Sky and the club still had it, I went to the club about 9pm expecting to watch the Ryder Cup (from west coast US). Club was shut - nobody had expressed any interest in coming to the club to watch it :(

We have it, watched by some but don't think the members asked or aware of cost. We have circa 1000 members so I guess £5 a head based on quote above (or is the price proportional to size of club / turnover / some other metric?)

We have had it for years and the subject of scrapping it comes up at each AGM so far the committee have resisted but I wonder for how much longer at those sort of prices
